On December 21st, Saturn and Jupiter will come as close to each other than they have been in 800 years! It will look like a double star. They will actually come within 456 million miles from each other.
As one with reverence for the stars and for all in creation in all Universes, I wish I could tell you the effects this will mean to the Earth, but I will be waiting to see, just like you!
Get out your telescopes! This will be glorious!

MY o/h has an app on his phone that works so well, that when you point it at the night sky it tells you exactly which stars are which.. showing stars that you can't even see, so I'll tell him about this..thanks Gaer... 😊

Hoping our weather cooperates.
 

I went outside and saw it about 20 minutes ago. It was like two stars side by side, one bigger and brighter, one smaller and dimmer.

Figured I'd go inside then come back out in a little while and try to see if they merged together.

Went back outside about 15 minutes later and it was gone. Nowhere to be seen.

Looked kinda like . . that.
 
We just got back from seeing it. We went to a small mound a couple of miles away where a friend brought his telescope. Before he found them in his telescope it was easy to see the two planets both with the naked eye and also in binoculars. Once we got them in his telescope view we could eventually see Saturn and it's rings and Jupiter and three of it's moons. It was pretty wonderful.

We were all masked up the entire time and moved away from each other when one was looking in the telescope. There were only the three of us. Of course my wife and I could be together but we kept distance from our friend.

We weren't sure if the clouds near us would be a problem and they weren't. In fact they gave us a rather nice sunset before the planetary show.

I tried to look at it with binoculars but my hands aren't steady enough. It's a bit hazy out tonight, also.

I've seen Saturn's rings through my binoculars several years ago. It's kind of bizarre. It looks like a toy floating way up in the sky.
