Amazon Prime's Them Is Intense, Unrelenting Psychological Horror

Set in the 1950s, Amazon Prime Video's Them uses both history and the supernatural to tell a psychological horror story about racism and trauma.

Them begins with a horrifying nightmare, and then never lets up from. Created by Little Marvin, the 1950s-set Amazon Prime Video anthology series centers on the malevolent forces encountered by a Black family -- from horrific racism to supernatural terror -- after moving to a white Los Angeles neighborhood. Given the premise's resemblance to HBO's Lovecraft Country, viewers might expect Them to follow a similar path; however, while Lovecraft Country leaned hard into magic and metaphor, Them emphasizes the deep psychological horror of Black trauma, creating a story in which the actions of real people are ultimately more harrowing than those of any paranormal entity.
