The birth rate in Italy and now Greece has fallen so far below the replacement rate that both these countries be vastly underpopulated later this century, unless they greatly increase immigration.
It's hard to imagine underpopulated being "vast".The birth rate in Italy and now Greece has fallen so far below the replacement rate that both these countries be vastly underpopulated later this century, unless they greatly increase immigration.
So what you're saying is that it's an oxymoron...like "Jumbo Shrimp".It's hard to imagine underpopulated being "vast".
I wasn't thinking that, but you're right on!So what you're saying is that it's an oxymoron...like "Jumbo Shrimp".

It's conceivable to me that some of the people of Greek or Italian heritage in the UK could decide to move back to Greece or Italy, since there may be increased room for them. By which I refer to employment opportunities & housing, and possibly being welcomed back as returnees. There's enough of them here to fill the gap...
Italy and Greece... well Italy in particular are rich countries.. there's no lack of housing. or well paid jobs... there's no fear of persecution and they have beautiful weather. We all know that because we go searching for their sun for our holidays every year... so there's no obvious reason to an outsider for them to be leavingIt's conceivable to me that some of the people of Greek or Italian heritage in the UK could decide to move back to Greece or Italy, since there may be increased room for them. LOL ..... Reminds me of back some time , the enviro fear was a second (ice age) . Now we're all going to melt .Wait. Back a couple decades, OVER-population was the oncoming problem, and people panicked. And now it's UNDER-population?
Very confusing.
That's one of the reasons why Canada accepts so many immigrants. I actually read an article a few years ago that said that as education increases, birth rates drop. The article was saying too that as more and more developing countries were able to educate their populations more completely, their birth rates would begin to drop and it was unlikely that we'd ever see such an overpopulation that the world would run out of room. I guess that was assuming that we didn't wreck our planet via the climate crisis. The birth rate in Italy and now Greece has fallen so far below the replacement rate that both these countries be vastly underpopulated later this century, unless they greatly increase immigration.
It's interesting to note that the countries named are predominantly Christian countries. In Italy it is Roman Catholic and Greece is Greek Orthodox. The official position of the Greek Orthodox Church was set forth in an encyclical written in 1937, which recommended abstinence as the only legal method of avoiding conception. The position of the Christian Orthodox Church on abortion and contraception is fundamentally identical to that of the Roman Catholic Church. The birth rate in Italy and now Greece has fallen so far below the replacement rate that both these countries be vastly underpopulated later this century, unless they greatly increase immigration.
I'm pretty sure Germany's rate is dropping too.The birth rate in Italy and now Greece has fallen so far below the replacement rate that both these countries be vastly underpopulated later this century, unless they greatly increase immigration.
Good point. I changed it to "severely underpopulated"It's hard to imagine underpopulated being "vast".
Many countries have this weird thing about "national purity" as if their indigenous population sprang from the soil like native plants, and human seeds that blow in from far away are weeds.Japan is losing population. I has an extremely aging population, and quite frankly, there are not enough young to care for them. Without immigration, most wealthy western nations would be in the same boat.
Educate women and birth rates drop. Present women with options beyond popping out a baby every 2 years throughout their fertile years, and most will happily embrace them. Not being fully dependent - economically, politically and otherwise - on men, empowers women to choose the life they want, not the life that's demanded of them by others. That's one of the reasons why Canada accepts so many immigrants. ....
Japan and countries with far too few replacement babies will have to get over their prejudices by welcoming immigrants with open arms - including granting their offspring full citizenship rights.

Agreed no country wants to bring in immigrants with communicable diseases or unsafe health practices. The countries with the highest birth rates have either very high AIDS rates or have a government backed religious majority that actively oppress women. I can't speak for Japan, but for me it's when immigrants from those areas bring the practices that led to problems in their home countries that cause my prejudice. I don't care what color or features a person has but I do care that people who can't grasp that unprotected sex spreads HIV to a partner and the baby, or that men who believe that women should be kept uneducated and swathed in fabric to breed more religious adherents bring those practices and beliefs in as replacements for low birthrates in developed countries.
They have opened up immigration to fill the gap in Canada and we don’t have the infrastructure to fill the needs created. We definitely don’t have the housing and medical ability to serve the growth. That's one of the reasons why Canada accepts so many immigrants. As for religions actively oppressing women, the US has plenty of home-grown citizens, judges and elected officials who already think that way.
