We are getting an IKEA. Maybe

Supposedly, IKEA is looking for a home in Western New York State, and may choose Rochester. We definatly have some empty retail space which I think they could use rather than build.
Anyone ever go there? Aside from those meatballs I keep hearing about, what is the fuss over the place? Not sure I am of a mind any more to have to put together my new furniture.

As the story goes, they MAY come here. But, we were on Amazon's short list and did not make the cut. I do not think I would shop there, but would go take a look.
 

I enjoy wandering through IKEA once a year or so. It's a decent distance from my house so I would never make a special trip; I just go when I'm going to be I the neighborhood. I think I bought two towels there once, but that's the limit of my actual shopping.
 

IKEA is a fun store.

I would think that they would look for the location that has the largest population of college students so they are assured a new crop of kids every four years that would be interested in DIY, flat pack furniture.

Students we have. Two major 4 year schools in Rochester, a 2 year school and other 4 year schools in surrounding towns.
 
I go every few years or so... the nearest one is about 15 miles from here... but I like the basement where all the kitchen stuff is , and cushions and lights and rugs, and everything is so cheap.

I've bought a dresser from there, and 5 chests of drawers for different bedrooms..that have stood the time longer than any other drawers, and what I like is that the drawers are so deep and hold so much.

I hate their towels and curtains... but the best quality persian rug I ever got was from ikea, the same patterned rug, of the same quality cost me 6 times less than if I'd bought it anywhere else..and 8 years on it's still like new.

Other than that I haven't really bought any other furniture, I think really just about everyone whose ever shopped in Ikea has at one time had a Billy Bookshelf..I remember having 2 way back in the 80's.

...but the cafe is brilliant..cheap... and the prawn and salmon salads are deelish, as well as the meatballs... and of course if you don't eat in the bright glassed restaurant people watching, you can always buy your hot dog and coke to go... for pennies just before you leave ...and don't forget the little shop which sells loads of Swedish food... errm..that's herring, salmon, herring, errm..salmon, Dill...the aforemenched meatballs ... and more herring lol... not forgetting that jam, jelly, cake , drinks and just about everything else is made from Lingonberries.. ;)

However, remember..everything is flat packed...so you have to be prepared to life the heavy items from the shelf yourself.... or go online and pay extra to have it delivered..
 
We have had ikea in Adelaide , SA ...(Australia) for years ( I’ve been in there once) it’s right next to,the one and only major airport in Adelaide ..apart from the airforce base where celebrities get to,land/ get off the plane away from the crowds
 
I've been to the Houston Ikea a few times but I can't remember ever buying anything. It's fun to go and look around but it's always crowded and not much that interests me. I think younger people who are just starting out and need relatively inexpensive furnishings are their best customers.

Oh, and I have a friend from Sweden who goes there to buy the food. :D
 
I go quite often to our Ikea, their restaurant is
nice and the food edible, you can also refill your
tea/coffee cup as often as you wish for free, if
you get an Ikea Family Card, tea and coffee are
free, I don't know about the soft drinks, but I
think that they would be free too.

Their furniture is fairly good quality and I find it
is better to used glue when building any as the
screws alone will go loose and it starts to wobble.

Prices are excellent.

I've only been once, to the nearest IKEA, about 30 miles away. We bought a chest of drawers and as hollydolly mentions, the drawers are deep and roll well. It's also stood the test of time. My only complaint is the pattern that you're required to follow, to get to what you wish to see. There seems to be no easy "escape route" back to the front door . Maybe all of their stores are not like this but our local one IS!! Not a problem for younger folks but at my age and having to now use a cane, it can be grueling.
 
Dave A you're right you have to follow the 'yellow brick road''... it's their marketing strategy...that way you have to see everything as you pass. of course you can turn against the tide and try and leave the way you came in but it's more difficult .

Mike, the soft drinks are not free.. coffee and tea are free with the family card but soft drinks are not. Ikea have stopped selling Coke and lemonade, and have replaced them with fruit drinks...but you can have free refills .

My only gripe with Ikea is that the furniture range is pretty much the same year in year out..
 
We have an Ikea not too far from where we live. We've purchased some household items from them, but find the furniture to be quite flimsy and won't consider buying from them.
You can look up any number of articles that talk about their furniture.
No one should be purchasing anything made of fiberboard, and they have a lot of that. That's a simple, but general rule. If you want cheap furniture, cheaply made, for the short term, then shop there.
But, the meatballs are good!
 
I don't know what you've bought RT...but I have to say the few items we've bought have outlasted some stuff we paid much more for in higher priced furniture stores....in fact the turth is we've never had one piece of Ikea furniture fall apart on us , ever!!

I do think like a lot of places we have to be careful in our choices... but so far we've been pleased with the few things we've bought , none of them are marked or chipped or broken in any way, and we've had them years.. I suspect it may be different if there's children around..but we take are of everything so never had a problem.

I agree the meatballs are good..and not only are they just available in the cafe, but you can also buy them frozen in packs at the little shop...and they are exactly the same ones they serve upstairs..

I'm wondering tho' now, if things might change since the patriarch and developer of Ikea has died, and the business is now in the sole hands of the sons..
 
i go there every once in awhile. I have never bought furniture from Ikea but have bought a lamp for the bedroom, matted picture frames and an artificial plant. I even got an umbrella from there. IKEA carries some interesting, fun items and are supposed to be less expansive. I went there once last year looking for ideas for a kitchen remodel but didn't see anything I'd use. My son and DIL went there last weekend...she was looking for a piece of furniture. I forgot to ask if she found what she needed.

In the report about them thinking to open locally, they said future plans will go on as father wanted.
 
I only go to Ikea when I travel. The first time I went it was great and I got a lot of things. Second and third time less and now I'm kind of over it. I may pick up a couple of candles. I hope the sons bring back the chocolate spread with little toffee bits. That was my husband's favorite but I haven't seen it for a while.
 
We’ve got an IKEA south of us, far away and bad, bad traffic to get there that we don’t go. The few times I have gone you just get a cart and follow all the other people in this giant line through the store and if you dare to stop and look, people let you know you’re slowing this giant line down. No stopping to smell the roses or checking stuff out. I believe you can shop online nowadays but have also heard shipping costs are really high.
