New owners of building, the best capitalists, were going to evict a 94-year-old bedridden tenant.

Landlords say they're dropping eviction pursuit of elderly SF tenant and other tenants following NBC Bay Area story

For every person over age 65 who has been saved from eviction by a news story, I'll bet there are 9 who get kicked or priced out of their rental housing. So why don't these landlords face criminal prosecution for this kind of Elder Abuse?

If the landlords worried about going to prison for evicting Seniors, perhaps they would stop buying mobile home parks and apartments and doing this? It's Elder Abuse. It's not harmless capitalism - it's Elder Abuse.

Golly - somehow I think the guy who can buy a $40,000,000 apartment building can somehow, with great difficulty no doubt
(I weep for him😭), afford to lose $1,000 to $3,000 a month on an apartment as he waits for her to die.

Two equal sides? No way in Hades.

This story in just one reason why I call California hell. One of many reasons.

If I ever go to a city council meeting to talk about these issues, I'm going to wear a sign around my neck saying:
I will be dead soon. Don't worry!
Because many landlords feel sad 😢, when renters speak out about the bad landlords. So, to assuage their hurt feelings, I will brighten the mood by declaring I'll die soon enough.

It would seem China is getting cut down by those same housing prices. Build, costs rise, no one can afford them.
Build rural, easier to own single family homes but costs to live there blast upward.

It's getting tougher, along with inflation of all expenses, Auto insurance skyrocketing, insurance in general, Blue Cross Blue shield.
Its crippling. Trusts are one way to manage it all. But it's the final costs that are so very awful. Drive in the Boat ramp where the
current runs thru it is a great plan! ..... :ROFLMAO: ......

Snowball has a member of her family, been in the hospital, nursing home, back to hospital over and over since Mid-December.
She is in a Trust, but its staggering the $$$$$$'s.

well in the uk.. even if you own your own home, you can still lose it over an unpaid bill... and not the mortgage....

Council tax here is what used to be known as Rates....

This stage 4 Cancer stricken 60 year old was evicted from her house today after a bill that's been disputed for years... It took 10 Enforcement officers and police back up, to do this....

..absolutely appalling IMO... regardless of who is in the right and who in the wrong...

This poor dying lady and her husband .. are now homeless.. and her house has been put on the market to pay the bill...

Surely that one apartment isn't costing that much if it's one little unit in a complex of units, probably dozens. And how much would they spend on court costs, filing fees, and legal counsel between now and the 94yr-old's last day?

I say wait it out.

And one of the biggest problems in China is that people buy an apartment before it's even built, and the building isn't completed before the builder or finance company goes bankrupt. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens have found themselves in that predicament; no apartment and no refund.

Very few laws protect people in general from evictions, especially evictions by new owners. So (and maybe it's a fine point, but...) we don't need stricter laws, we need laws.

Calif is one of the few states that says you can't evict someone into homelessness. However, the person who's being evicted is given a time-frame in which they must find somewhere to live, or take to the streets. I think it's only 30 days, and the new home could be a relative or friend's place, a motel, or even a vehicle.

It's inhumane.

well the lady with the cancer is probably one of the rarer breeds, and takes responsibility for herself..and as she said.. they don't actually owe the money it was paid way back in 2015, and she's been in dispute with them ever since..

When I was a kid, I remember if people were old or ill..or both... they were treated with absolute kid gloves.. not today.. no-one seems to respect anyone at all..elderly sick.. no-one .. why did it take 10 Enforcement officers and police to evict a cancer stricken woman...?... of course it didn't but our police have become a laughing stock..

It's no wonder the police don't come out for burglaries or stolen cars..they're too busy standing by protecting 6ft tall scary enforcement officers.. against a tiny stage 4 cancer sufferer.. it makes my blood boil...

Maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of the Population is rapidly approaching a predicament "where"?
Birth and life are a 7th wonder! Is the rest just B.S. ?
Or is the Question, which Blood Kin, or Family member, or Couple want to be responsible?
Who can take on the responsibility. Today, thas a real hard answer to become.
One thought may be affordable Senior living groups. And you just got to know higher taxes.
The other thought is the back door is left unlocked and the Seniors just wonder away unknowing! ..... :coffee: ...
Another thought may be all the 1000's of vacant unlivable homes in large cities and what to do with the
1000's of acres of space that all those homes when torn down will be filled withs? "RAT's Cockroaches"
Sure now the homeless burn the wood from them at night. Rapidly the Cities on earth are becoming a Joke. MT 3 Story Row Houses, unlivable & sure some neighborhoods are building new that look just like the ones built in 1920.
Sure it may be possible Billionaires control those run down neighborhoods and the Football teams we love 2.

Or Are we Just a bunch of Ant's in a Death Circle, maybe some get out of it by sheer blindnesses' ? ... :coffee:

This should be mentioned on the Parliament floor, right?

Where do the homeless go in the U.K.? And do you have charities people can reach out to in order to get help with paying bills? Or churches?

My parents were landlords of the duplex we lived in, only one renter. That is how they managed to pay their mortgage. It's a contract. If you don't have the rent, you are out regardless of age, disabilities, etc. My parents had to worry about their own parents and taking care of us and working two full time jobs. They did not have the time, the money or the energy to deal with renters with problems.

Now I know it is not the same situation. But even to a landlord who owns many properties, how many people are you supposed to give a break to? It's not the landlord who is at fault. I think that if you did not save enough for rent or to buy home that is your problem, regardless of age, illness, etc. Now if the government has a plan to help these renters, that would be so great! But don't dump on the landlord.

the homeless do the same in the Uk as they do in the USA..they pitch tents.. they sleep in cars..they sleep under bridges..they sleep in shop doorways..etc.....and these charities that are supposed to help with debt really only pay lip service to it...

There are some homeless hostels.. but it's first come first get a bed.. and they're turfed out in the morning.. ...of course these are only in the cities.. and only in very few parts of the cities.. so if you're homeless, no transport and the homeless shelter is 6 miles across the city , you're out of luck.. same with the food banks that dole out soup 2 nights a week..

Churches here have a very different role to those in the USA.. they don't hep anybody.... there might the odd vicar who goes and feeds the homeless on the streets at night, or the very odd one who will allow people to sleep in the church on freezing night. but generally that's as rare ad hens' teeth...they certainly don't set themselves up as advisors...unless anyone thinks saying '' god will provide my son..'' is good advice , cuz that's about the extent of it..

You are right.

I heard an expert on NPR interviewed a few weeks ago and the numbers of aging Boomers the country will have in the next 20 years is astounding! 2020 Census Will Help Policymakers Prepare for the Incoming Wave of Aging Boomers

What he was saying is that we not only don't have enough personnel to work with Seniors on the usual stuff, healthcare, home repairs, in-home care, but we do not have enough HOUSING.

There is a myth that all the Boomers have 4-bedroom homes and they are staying put in them until they die. That is a MYTH.

The fact is, Boomers get divorced and sell the house, they move to be closer to family, some continue working well into their 70s and 80s to afford life, and in some states, Seniors are becoming homeless. In California, homeless Seniors are one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population.

WHY? Because the rents are set at what a 30-year-old prime-of-life renter can afford. Not at what a 70-year-old can afford.

You would think Congress, being so very old, might be concerned about these housing projections.

Same thing happens all over Spain, Greece and Cyprus...
