Happy Groundhog Day! My Grandfather, John, was born on February 2, 1888. I was 4 years old when he died. His memory comes to life for me on this day as I remember and celebrate his birth on the second official ground hog day!
How did Groundhog Day begin?
The first Groundhog Day was celebrated on Feb. 2, 1887, at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, PA.
The holiday has roots in a few different religions, but it took a similar message from each of them. Groundhog Day was originally a Celtic festival celebrating the changing of the seasons.
"Before Punxsutawney Phil's rise to fame, bears predicted the weather in France and England, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. In Germany, people would look to badgers for their weather forecasts."
"German immigrants who came to the American colonies couldn't find badgers to continue their tradition, so they opted to use groundhogs instead. The rest is history."
