If there's some sign or suggestion it may be problematic, then don't go.
On the other hand, if it's just about being nervous doing something you don't usually do, then resist it and go. You're only strangers once. Five minutes into the meeting, you'll know each other. This is especially true if it's at a public cafe or something.
Speaking from a male point of it is different meeting someone for the first time face to face for males than females. If your gut says no listen to it there is a reason for that. Who set the date up, you or Casanova?
Perhaps invite someone you trust and make it a double date before finding yourself in an unwanted situation?

I dont think it needs to be a double date I think that just makes it awkward.
OP did say they were meeting in a public place so that is always good for a first time - somewhere relatively short time frame like a coffee in a cafe rather than a full length meal is good idea too
