Western NY Blizzard of '77

I remember this too, Marie. I remember there was so much snow, as kids, we got on the porch roof and jumped off into the snow. Those were the good old days....:)

Anyone living in close proximity to the Great Lakes has the "opportunity" to witness huge snowfalls. Just a month ago, the news was reporting that Erie, PA. had received over 5 feet of snow in just a day or two.

I lived and survived the 'Blizzard of '77' with my parents, I remember like it was yesterday. My dad and I both were working downtown at the time,I worked at a place called 'Title Guarantee',delivering title searches to the different law firms. My dad was clerk of the Federal Court,he and a few co-workers were stuck at the office for 2 days. The winds had really started to intensitify that afternoon,my dad told me to leave work& go stay with mom who was alone in house with our dog. My boss wasn't happy when I told him I was leaving early, couple other co-workers followed me out the door
This snow storm put Buffalo on the national news for a week.. Our 'nickname' is 'city of good neighbors' and it showed during this weather event,we became 'hearty souls'. All the snowstorms/blizzards we've had over the years don't faze us, we can handle anything 'mother nature' throws at us.
A couple weather records set in '77 and still in effect today
1. 68.3 inches greatest amt of snow ever in Jan'77
2.45 straight days of below freezing temps 12/26/76-2/8/77
3.199.4 inches greatest snowfall for 1 season '76-'77
For the past couple of years,we've had below normal snow totals,2017 we got 70 inches,2016 it was 50 which is fine by me. Our average is around 100 Sue

It happened on January 28, 1977. I was living in Batavia, NY and remember it well. I wish I still had a picture my dad took of me standing in front of a very tall (about 6 feet) snow drift in our back yard. Had to miss a few days work.

Below the video is a link to an article about it.

I was quite a distance from your location, but recall it very well. I'd just "officially" graduated from high school a couple of days earlier.

Yup, we New Yorkers do know snow, don't we? :playful:

Somehow, though, the so-called lake-effect snow manages to get hundreds of miles downstate. I never really understood that.
And Nor'easters are another source of snowstorms.
