What’s one truth about life that you think everyone eventually learns?

Cold plunges are on another level, but it does help with inflammation.

I was just chatting with ai about this sudden cold. Not everyone should try it, especially if they have borderline health issues. I wonder if it is ever used in supervised therapy.

In younger years there were some unavoidable circumstances for me when there was no hot water.

Also once upon a time I visited a gym that had a cold plunge next to the hot tub, that included a rope hanging in the center to help get in and out.

I think those polar bear plunge people are a different species of human.

can also give you a stroke. 🤣
It can — for some people.
When you suddenly immerse yourself in very cold water, your body has a strong “cold shock” response:

Heart rate spikes
Blood pressure jumps up quickly
Blood vessels constrict
Stress hormones surge

For most healthy people, this is uncomfortable but not dangerous.
However, for others, this sudden stress can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, especially if any of the following apply:

Higher-risk groups
High blood pressure (diagnosed or undiagnosed)
Heart disease or arrhythmia
History of stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)
Diabetes
High cholesterol
Smokers
People >50 who haven’t had a heart check in a while

Cold shock raises blood pressure sharply, and high spikes in BP can trigger a stroke.

Is there any situation where ice plunges are safer?
Yes — if done gradually and with precautions:

Start with cool water first (not icy).
Limit early plunges to 10–20 seconds.
Keep your head above water (cold water on the head can provoke stronger blood vessel changes).
Avoid plunging right after exercise (heart is already stressed).
Never plunge alone.
But if you have heart or blood pressure issues, it’s best to ask a doctor first.

Are there benefits to cold exposure?
Some people report:
Reduced inflammation
Better mood
Improved recovery

But the science is still mixed. Benefits are mild, while the risks can be serious for the wrong person.
