When i lived in Wyoming andnow here, tho not needed as often, i keep a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol just inside the house. If lock or doors frozen (sometimes after a snowstorm only the doors on side that got blasted by the wind and snow would be sealed) spray into the spaces, in a few seconds you could a door open then if car started, once it was defrost mode and heater would loosen others as well as melt ice on windows.I was there! I lived 40 miles north of Chicago in Waukegan. I doubt the car would have started, but I'll never know because the door was frozen shut. Besides, it was so cold I couldn't stay outside for long. I think the air froze in my lungs! That played a part in my move to Kentucky where the winters are quite a bit more moderate.
Had a Chevy Blazer i always said was cold blooded cause even with Block heater plugged in if temp went below 0 F it would not start till above 5F. My Jeep Compass was so much better about that.
