What Are Granny Pods?

Granny pods are small detached guest houses, typically found in the backyard of a home, that meet the needs of older adults. Similar to an in-law cottage or mother-in-law suite, granny pods are usually one level and include a bedroom, bathroom, living area and kitchenette. Granny pods are also built to be accessible and safe. Good or Bad Idea and why?

I actually live in an in-law-suite but in my own house. When we bought the house decades ago we used it as an art studio and catch-all. I don't need the extra kitchen but I like the "en suite" bathroom. It separates me from my renters.

"Granny flat" is a cliche but my grandma really did live in a purpose-built flat upstairs from my aunt and uncle. The obvious flaw in this is that older people often have trouble with stairs. She later went into care and died aged 93.

That really does sound like the classic “granny flat” setup. It’s true though stairs can become a real challenge as people get older. Still, it must have been nice for her to be close to family before moving into care. Living to 93 is quite a long and full life.
