Memories...Some Of My Fondest.

I remember when i was only a youngster, playing hopscotch, and baseball and tag with boys & girls alike... those were the days! We were a family of 7 altogether, mom, dad, 3 brothers and 1 sister. We didnt have much money, but there was lots of love to go around. I remember when dad would have tis man come once a week, usually Saturday mornings, and put a HUGE block of ice in our fridge.

i never forgot this, as it seemed so big! And, sitting on the kitchen floor, would be 2 large bags, one with powdered skim milk, does anyone remember that? and as well, one large bag with rolled oats.

In those days, they weren't flavoured either! So, for breakfast, we get rolled oats, topped with powdered, LUMPY skim milk! And, we had this very old stove in kitchen, when the toaster wouldnt work, we'd just stick a knife into the bread and toast it over an element. But,it actually tasted good! Every morning dad would line all five of us kids up for a large teaspoon of cod liver oil...yuck! but yu know, it sure kept us from being sick. (and this wasnt sweetly flavoured either)

I remember quite a bit from those days, some good memories and some bad, but for some strange reason, i cannot remember the childhood fiends i played with...isnt that strange. One girl does stand out, but that is only because while playing one day, when i was 12,i broke my finger. I remember as well going on the bus every saturday with dad down to this radio shop, where he'd pick up a part or two for another project.

He was into fixing up old radios & tv's, as when he was in the air force, he was a mechanic and maintained the air planes and so on...i think he flew once or twice, but had a bad ear, so he opted to just stay on ground and do this job. I remember my sister and i had to sleep togewther, and it seemed the only contact we had was pulling each others' hair!

I swear she has a bald spot to this day hahaha....I also remember a time especially when i was only about 5 years old, was playing and cut my knee on some glass, but this stands out because i remember my father carrying me on his shoulders all the way to the hospital, then back home in the middle of the night. but anyway, there a so many more warm childhood memories that come to mind, but im running out of space here.

It has been fun reminiscing a bit, makes me feel close again to mom & dad, rest their souls. These memories are ours to treasure. Oh....another memory is of my dad getting me in the kitchen every sunday night, to try to teach me how to cook.

The thing here is, whatever i tried to make and the results were always terible, my brothers had to eat! hahahah...they still kid me about this time to this day, but it is a fun memory. And before dad passed away, he'd come up to my house, to have dinner with hubby , my son and myself, and he once said "You finally learned how to cook" well, i am no chef, but hubby has survived 36 years now on my cooking so...What are some of your childhood memories? Dee

Loved reading your memories. I was very gullible. I like to say WAS because I don't like to say 'Im very gullible." Anyway.. there was this keds shoe commercial where the kids wearing those shoes were jumping so high. I just had to have some of those shoes at any cost. I begged and begged for those shoes. The day finally came where I got my own brand new pair of keds shoes. Joyfully I gave it a go and went hopping all over the yard. Then I burst into tears crying " Mine are broken! Mine are broken!"
Nope..no glorious high jumps for me

Here's a keds show commercial from the 50's . That was earlier than the one I saw in the 60's . Same type of thing though

Roaming around my neighborhood on a Saturday, with my bestie, hanging out at the comic shop, then going to the drugstore for fries and milkshakes. Heaven for a 10 year old.

oh oh yes..Cookie reminded me. My Banana bike! My trusty banana bike. I rode for hours . Oh the marvelous freedom...

The library when I was young. Grew up in a small town in Illinois and our library was a huge old home converted to a library. Can still hear the old wood floors creaking and the piano playing in the basement where dance classes were held.

Being a babysitter and able to watch telly after kids were in bed. I got to watch the more adult shows lol. I thought I was so informed and cool.

Thanks for sharing your special memories Dee. :sentimental:

We didn't have much money either, but lots of love at home. I remember spending days at home with my mother while my older siblings were in school. I'd help a little with housework, got a kick out of the shapes the frozen clothes took on in winter. I'd play by myself when she watched her soap operas, we'd sometimes walk for miles shopping on the avenue, mostly window. We'd stop and I'd get a treat like an ice cream sandwich in summer.

For awhile in summer, we'd rent a tiny bungalow near the beach to get out of the city. I remember wonderful times out in our small boat fishing, swimming and playing at the beach, jumping over the waves as my older sisters held my hands at the ocean. I remember sitting outside on my father's knee in the evenings as he smoked a White Owl cigar to keep the gnats away, loved that smell.

I remember the magic of Christmas morning, nothing was there the night before, but while I slept my parents set up a little live tree and put a few small presents under the tree for each of us. I was lucky to feel so secure and loved, and miss all those who surrounded me as a child who have passed on already.

Visiting my Mom's friends when I was very young. Of course it involves cats. The one woman had a huge garden in her yard. I don't know if the cats were hers or from the neighborhood. But they were seemingly everywhere and very friendly. It was like this kitty magical garden.

Then there was an friend in PA. This woman was way elderly and probably housebound. She had a huge white Persian...satin pillow, you know she probably spoon fed it too. Oh and she would put makeup on the cat. Blue eye shadow and a smudge of lipstick...Maybe a bit eccentric but she was a nice lady.

My childhood memories go back to being ill treated by so called Sisters-of-Mercy way back in 1930s.
When I finally went home to rejoin my family in 1936 I was just getting accustomed to our Cockney way of life when WW2 was declared. Then being machine gunned in the hopfields in 1939 just after the war started. Followed by being bombed out twice during the London Blitz and after much hoo haa being evacuated to the Midlands in 1941 and once again being machine gunned by a stray Jerry. I was by this time just coming up to 11 years of age and puberty. I cannot say that I really had a childhood BUT strangely enough I would not change it.

Metal roller skates that attached to the soles of my shoes with a 'key'. I flew on those things, and it gave me a feeling of such freedom. I skated
everywhere .. until the metal wheels actually wore through, and I never got another pair because it ruined my shoes.

Going around the corner to the shop that had the soda pop cooler .. big
thing with cooled water in it. I always chose the red cream soda. If I was
lucky, the shop owner would allow me to take all the bottle caps. We used
to 'wear' them on our shirts and blouses by inserting the cork lining on one side to keep the cap on. Some boys wore them on their baseball caps.

Some of my favorite memories was growing up in the City ,and playing outside at night. There were many kids on my street alone. We would play and some parents would be sitting outside talking with our neighbors. When I was about 12yrs old my favorite game was jailbreak. First the girls would hide and the boys would look for them. Who ever found you would get a kiss. One boy would always tell me where to hide so he would find me and he would kiss me. Then he would tell me where he was going to hide so I could find him. That was a looooot of fun !

Grade 6 seemed to be the year the boys and girls really noticed one another. On the first day back to school, we played "Boys chase the Girls", and when the boy caught the girl, he kissed her on the cheek. It wasn't my first experience getting kissed. In 4th grade, a boy kissed me on the cheek and I cut and ran all the way home. It felt icky.
