What are the most frightening horror films you ever watched?

Psycho, I was just a kid and saw it at the drive in, scared the bejeesus out of me.

Exorcist, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand out. Never since have I had that sensation

Salem's Lot, pretty creepy vampire movie

As strange as it might seem, while Psycho was playing, I was too busy kissing my girlfriend to let it scare me. It did get me tense after I watched it without that distraction.

The Exorcist, I never wanted to see for fear of the supernatural. Some people experienced nervous breakdowns after watching that film.
BTW Jesus is never described as having any difficulties expelling demons. In fact, they panicked when they saw him approach.

Never watched Salem's Lot, but judging by trailer photos, it looks pretty horrifying.

I think it was "The Tingler" where they had people dressed like a doctor and nurse in the lobby checking people's hearts.

The seat backs in our theater were equipped with vibrating apparatuses so that when the Tingler (which looked like a large spiky slug and attached itself to your spine UNLESS you screamed) "escaped" from the screen into the theater, you were told to "scream, scream, scream for your lives." Just then, the vibrators would go off and, indeed, there were screams.

It was fun. Only time I was able to scream for my life in a theater and not get kicked out.

Have you ever been kicked out of a theater? I was once. I was about 10 and with some friends, sitting in the front row of the balcony. Somebody (not me, not me, and I don't know why I went along with it because I was usually pretty well behaved...) got the great idea to spit partially chewed gummy somethings over the rail on the people below.

Even though we quickly moved somewhere else, we were ratted out, expelled and told never to darken their doors again. We were back the next Saturday, of course, but good as little lambs
Thanks for familiarizing me with that film. No, I never misbehaved at the movies. Only two times I felt uncomfortable there.

1. Once when this couple who sat in from of us and began effusively necking and refused to stop upon request that they go to a hotel instead. In order to escape the display, we were forced to sit under this huge heavy chandelier suspended from the theater ceiling dangling like some Damocles Sword above our heads.

2. When this kid named Porfidio who had watched the film went again so he could announce everything that was about to happen so we didn't have to worry. Whenever the film became dramatically interesting, he would jump in with: " Don't worry!" and reveal the plot. Even though I sat at a distance, I could still hear him.

I agree. It scared the "hell" out of me, as it did the entire audience. Coming out of the theater, I thought if I put up a stand selling 'Holy Water", I could make a killing. ;)
The weird thing I find about such films is how they depict the servants of an almighty God struggling against creatures who are supposed to be puny in comparison.

I agree about the Exorcist. Horrible. I have a friend who read the book twice.
Twice? Yikes! Strange!
I wrote a sci fi horror story, scared the hell out of myself, and promised never to write nor read one ever again.
