My dad was a contractor, so I was basically slave labor. However, he did teach me framing, painting, roofing, finish trimming, and flooring. And then, my uncle taught me plumbing, the old German who worked for them taught me all about household electrical work, and the Portuguese fellow taught me cement work. All stuff I hated as a youth. These hidden skills did come in mighty handy later on in life as I was able to repair, re-build, or re-wire any home I owned later on without having to pay any others. Then, the ultimate climax was building my own home with just the wife and I. No outside help needed.
For that, I'm forever thankful that although dad and I didn't see eye to eye, he did leave a part of himself in me.
