What Are You Saving It For?

I guess I was saving all these years so I would have something to do when I was retired :)

But seriously, there is something like a 3-year rule. That might be a bit harsh, but I think 10 years is more than generous enough. 5-year sounds about right for me.

But there are things one would categorize as "hardware" consisting of springs, washers, etc. I save limited amounts of these and I have used them many times to repair items. I call them "doodads". How many times I tell my wife, I found a "doodad" that worked perfectly to fix this! The key is to take a long look at the item and decide if it has "doodad" value.

I'm saving cash for when I have to go into a home. For years, I 've been dragging "good stuff" home, and cramming it into every nook I could. Now, I look around, and it's clutter and mostly unwanted junk. I totally understand hoarders, who won't throw away a dead battery, because you might need it. Even if I haven't used it in 30 years, if I throw it out, damn! I'll only have to buy a new one.

..that's just one cupboard I have 2 more bigger ones.. I only ever wear one or 2 of the same pairs.. nuts!! I need to get around to wearing more..

I know you have limited space but it really bothers me to see one wonky shoe on each shelf. Either go with two pair per shelf so they fit or position each wonky shoe the same so they're as symmetrical as possible.

When you're finished post a new picture otherwise I may not be able to sleep tonight.

I don’t save , I just buy what I need , if the savings go up or down , I don’t notice…
It’s alway good to have a large nest egg though…it gives one Peace off mind I think ,!

I used to have a subscription to Cruise Travel magazine. It was always nice to look at all the cool photos and to read the latest news in the industry. I saved all them thinking I would need to look up whatever. Then one day about 12 years ago, I took the whole lot and dump them in the recycle bin in the garage. Out they went with the next pickup.

Interesting how different people respond to limited items like shoes when growing up. I used to have one pair of dress shoes (also called church shoes) and one pair of sneakers. It was never a problem for me because that's the way it was as a kid. When I started working as an adult and having to wear business suits, I had two pairs of polished shoes. I never saw it as deprivation and I was making the decisions then. Now in retirement, I have one suit and a sports jacket. Hope I never have to wear them as I don't like dressing up. But I am keeping them just in case.

As for cash, I did the saving over the years. I don't let inflation bother me because I basically only buy necessities. Now in this last stage of life, I am in the spend down mode. Whatever is left over my kids can have at it.

I appreciate your effort but it still hurts to see such heater skelter (sigh). I'll watch some cute kitten videos to help bring peace to my mind.

so you would have been quite happy as a child going to school in winter and or heavy rain with no soles on your shoes... and your socks in holes on the soles because you were walking on the road in your socks basically... and getting bullied at school for that.. or the agony of squeezing your feet into shoes that were one or 2 sizes too small ? you thought that was normal ?...not deprivation ?

As much as I love some things I own, I don't see the point of continuing to store them. I can't keep everything. I'm done saving, and I'm no longer collecting. I'm getting rid of things slowly but surely.

The thread about purses reminded me that I’m saving purses. I’m not ready to get rid of the last ones yet. I just can’t do it.

Well, the thread title made me think of somethin' else.......
Then I thought, "Nah......couldn't be. We're much to old to save that."

Some things I save were gifts from family or friends. Just being able to look and touch those things gives me great comfort. When I put on a pair of earrings left to me from an Aunt, cook in a pan, make a pie in a much loved pie pan, put flowers in a crystal vase, I am back with those people that made such a difference in my life. My home is full of those type of special things, I would never get rid of them. I have talked to my son and his wife about these things because they are much more than things. They are a history of the generations before and deserve to be cherished.

Well done that lady, times I have heard that a lady can't have too many pairs of shoes. I wouldn't dare show you the other racks of shoes in my wardrobe, but you can have a peek at some of my Aloha shirts. All made by the lady's fair hand. There's a few more, of course!

They all look as good as new. You must have a shoe fetish! I'm the same with handbags. I enjoy looking at my bags, sitting on the shelf, but I usually only use the same 3, depending on where I am going.
Hmmm...notice that they all are "athletic shoes". Perhaps you harbor a secret wish to become more "athletic"? LOL.

I think you might mean me Liberty.. not Lavinia... :D you will see I have a cupboard full of Boots and shoes as well in the post further down, but my cupboard full of trainers, is just because they are comfortable. I was an Athlete in my youth,Track and field.. I no longer do that.. the trainers are just for walking, which is something I love to do...
