What are your ten most favorite sounds?

A few nights ago, a huge raccoon that I've never seen before showed up. Looks like a pregnant female; looks like she swallowed a watermelon. She also asked for seconds; she's probably about to have at least 3 babies. She didn't let me near her for a couple of days, but last night she started eating while I was still putting food in the bowl.
I added almonds & walnuts to make sure her babies are healthy. I can't wait to see them; a few years ago, another raccoon brought her babies to my cafe. :giggle:

How beautiful is that!

I wish I could visit to enjoy their company. We have raccoons, not all the time, but regularly, though they never stay long enough for us to feed them, but in fall they stick around for a handful of days eating the fruit off our trees and I just love them.

Keep taking good care of them, Win.

1. My wife's laughter is right at the top of my list.

2. The sound of a cat purring, it is very relaxing. (My cat is in my lap right now helping me out, she does wonder why she isn't number 1.)

3. A distant train whistle has a charm all of its own.

4. Gentle rainfall, especially when it falls on trees or grass. The sound of gentle rain on a good tent will make me sleep like a baby.

5. I like the sound of almost all birds, but especially sea birds and geese flying in formation. Leave out the sounds of peacocks, turkeys, and crows. The visuals add to the effect.

6. Happy children playing. In the summer our local YMCA runs a summer camp and those happy kids are in an adjacent area where their cheerful play raises the all around "happy" factor in my mind.

7. Beautiful church bells, we have a Lutheran church a couple of blocks away and when those beautiful bells play the Navy Hymn (Eternal Father), I stop what I am doing and take in the moment.

8. Music, but especially cool jazz and good classical. Toss in a fireplace and I am all in.

9. I have often wondered what is there about a top loading washing machine humming away in the other room.

10. Finally, I get a kick out of the roar of my turbo charged engine when I "punch it." I have to suppress doing this under most circumstances.

  2. The sound of being underwater while scuba diving and waiting to decompress
  3. Silence (or something close to it)
  4. A child's joyous laughter
  5. Songbirds (not all birds)
  6. Thunder (which is rather rare out here, if I were in a place with a lot of it I might not like it as much.)
  7. Ocean waves
  8. A crackling campfire
  9. The sound of a sailboat moving through the water
  10. The sound of a Tibetan singing bowl
 
1. The sound of silence when I am meditating.
2. The sound of truths being spoken.
3. The sound of the wind rustling through the leaves.
4. The sound of rain on my roof.
5. The sound of the birds in my garden.
6. The sound of children's laughter.
7. The sound of people laughing.
8. The sound of my horse neighing when I approach.
9. The sound of my favourite pieces of music.
10. The sound of my husband and children ringing in to say "love you."
Many more but I have reached the limit!

I wish you could come visit us, Gaer.

We had one visit for a few weeks straight, and a really big owl. He/she would hoot between the hours of 2 am and 4 am, and it sounded like a man calling out, that's how deep and loud it was.

That would a great horned owl Marg. It's the only one that Hoots and is also the biggest owl. I 've been hearing them almost every morning before sunrise lately.

Yes, when I say big, maybe 22" in height, possibly a little larger/taller. Never heard hooting like that in my life.
 
Well let's see...
1. The gurgling of the coffee maker signaling I'm close to pouring a cup.
2. The little crack the pop tab makes when you open a can of pop.
3. The sound of the toilet completing it's flush cycle so I know I don't have to call the landlord.
4. The sound of peace and quiet when my neighbor in the duplex goes on vacation.
5. The sound of the fan running so I can sleep.
6. Gentle sounds of meditation music.
7. The sound of a clock ticking.
8. The sound of a cat purring.
9. The sound of the breeze rustling the leaves in the trees.
10. The sound of the rain outside the house.
 
Can't help but add a few favourites related to the baby/toddler years in our house.

  • The squeaking of the railings on the drop-side baby cribs when raising and lowering them
  • The push toy that resembled a vacuum wand with little wheels, where when pushed on the floor, coloured balls popped around inside the clear plastic dome
  • The plasticy rustling sound rubber pants made at diaper-change time, and when I'd pat my kids on their rubber-panted bottoms
  • Those old-fashioned baby sleepers/one-piece pyjamas with the rubber-bottomed feet, and how they'd slap and stick to the vinyl flooring with my children's every step
  • The cries of laughter and joy when bathing my kids... how they loved to play and splash!
  • The sound of gentle pats on a newborns back when burping them

Would love to have the owl that hunts and eats skunks around.

Boy, do we get a lot of skunks throughout the summer.

That's not gonna happen. Owls are smart that way. They eat rodents, birds, bunnies, if you have chickens they may go after a hen, (a chihuahua once in a while.)

I hate skunks. Can't shoot 'em either.

Believe it or not, I just did a quick check, and it's the Grey-Horned Owl that preys on skunks on a regular basis.

The great Horned owl DOES eat skunks! I'll be darned!

Great horned owls are one of only a few species of animals that regularly eat skunks. Since owls only have enough sense of smell to enable them to taste food, great horned owls don't have a clue as to how awful the skunk smells, they only know they taste good.
