What are your thoughts on Sologamy.?

I was watching an interesting program on Australian T.V. last night called "Insight". One of the audience members said she believes in Sologamy and has actually married herself and has never been happier. The program showed her in a wedding dress looking into a mirror and placing a wedding band on her finger., saying her vows. She had friends present and also her mother. They probably didn't understand it either but were there to support her. Another man spoke about his AI friend,
whom he speaks with on a computer. He says they get along very well, and he does whatever the character asks him to do, such as, washing up. They even have arguments together.??? My son was watching with me, and we couldn't fathom what it was all about. Maybe someone on here could join in the discussion. Has the World gone mad??????

Well, at first I was going to comment about this from an ignorant point of view, as I knew absolutely nothing about this topic. However, I decided to read up on it to discover what it's all about, and like many things, it's not what one would think, or I thought. The same mindset applies to why people become nudists. We may think they just love to look at other naked people, but that's not at all the reason. It's all about freedom and letting your body breathe and feeling liberated. They couldn't care less about what each other's body looks like.
Anyway, my first perception was that it was a narcissistic act of people with deranged egos, but turns out it isn't. This is more of a vow to love yourself. One can take this vow, and still be in committed relationships with others. Personally, my view on it would boil down to the reason behind it. If it is simply a vow to love yourself the way you really wish to be loved by others, then I think it's great. However, if the reason has more romantic overtones, then I would find it a bit disturbing.
 

bobcat48 - It's okay to love yourself but surely these people have a conscience . One only has to look at the evening news to see how thousands of people are struggling to stay alive in war torn countries and little children starving because both their parents have succumbed to illness and starvation. Hopefully these people, when it's their turn to go ,they will leave a Will which will help Mankind.

I was puzzled by your comment because I wasn't sure how it applied. Perhaps you may be reading more into Sologomy than is necessary. From what I read, the act of marrying yourself does not preclude being in a relationship with another or even being married to another person. It simply means that it is a cathartic declaration of self-compassion and a promise to give to yourself what you often seek from other people. The idea is to hold your own heart and care for it as much as you would someone elseā€™s; a lifelong commitment to loving yourself fully.
Many people lose themselves in a relationship and even neglect themselves in order to please others. Many people don't really love themselves and so they are more prone to relationship failures. This is essentially a vow or commitment to do that. It doesn't mean living a life of solitude or celibacy, or take the place of marriage. A person may choose to do that, and many people do that don't go through this ceremony.
Anyway, just thought I would try to clarify that point.
 
@Bobcat, I find it interesting, you took the time to search out and understand why someone would do this instead of
a curt, clever remark. That says a lot about you. It appears there is a lot more interesting facets to you.

You're very kind. I'm ignorant of many things, but always curious because I guess, over the years, I have been wrong about a great deal of issues that I had a preconceived notion about. Often my first perception is not based on knowledge and therefore isn't very credible. Like many others, I'm just a work in progress.
 
I had never heard the word Sologamy before so thank you oscash for teaching me a new term. (y) I have heard of people marrying themselves and just thought it was 'different' and not 'my thing' Over the years I have worked on not judging because who knows what motivates others to do what they do. No one is getting hurt here so I say let everyone spend their time and money doing what they feel is right for them and they should not be bothered if there are negative opinions.

Not much, so far as I can tell. I seems to mostly be about the public declaration and ceremony, no legal basis for it.

In the olden days we had what was called mentors who nurtured us and made us reach for the stars - they have long gone and now we have pologomy? - how drass?

When I was a small boy I was told that I could go blind doing that!
