The book 'Longitude' by Dava Sobel was another I could not put down.
The first non-fiction book I read in one sitting and have returned to it many times over the years.
Unlike Latitude which is easily determined, Longitude relies on 'Time'.
The quest for a time piece that could withstand rolling waves, temperature changes, etc. and not lose any 'time'
was a problem ever since man put to sea.
Even a clock that was off by seconds over a long voyage could doom ships to miss land fall by many miles.
This is the story of a Carpenter, untrained in watch making, who made the most celebrated Chronometer clock in history,
which solved the problem of Longitude.
Now we have GPS to pin point our location, but his story is a page turner.
On a side note, I also have a copy of the book in Audio form and the intro is read by Neil Armstrong, would might
know a bit about how important you position is.
