What can't/can you do when the power goes out during the day at your house?

Once, we lost power for 5 days. Food went into a cooler and buried in the snow. We grilled on a gas grill on the deck. Many stores were open on generators, bought cooked deli food and rotisserie chickens. My office ran on generators and had showers, thank goodness.

Thankfully I haven’t lost power in a very long time here in Fresno, although I thought we might last night. We had a very rare occurrence...a thunderstorm! The lights flickered for a moment but that was it and it was all over in about 15 minutes.

Did lose power a few years ago overnight in the summer and without A/C it was very hard to sleep...had to put wet towels on my body to cool off.

That’s the worst in Fresno...power outage in summer, unbearable because of the heat.

We live in the country and have had our share of power outages. The longest it’s been out was 3 days and it was tough. We are on well water also. There are quite a few different considerations for those living in the country.

For instance most people who live in the country in our area have a sub-pump. What that does is pump the excess water that surrounds your house and dumps it elsewhere. This prevents your basement from flooding. If the power goes off this is our greatest concern especially in the spring when the snow is melting so preventing this is crucial which is why we invested in a generator. Now when the power goes we can have it for the important things like that pump, fridge if it’s been a while. The freezer is usually good for a while since the frozen food keeps it cold for a long time.

We have a wood stove with plenty of wood for heat, have access to free water for plumbing needs , which is nice to drink and our internet service is completely independent. I’m on an iPhone and my husband has a company iPhone and computer with its own wifi which they pay for.

We have a stock of food also so we don’t worry too much about it. I can entertain myself endlessly so am ok.
