If I bring food to a pot luck meal in the bowl on the left, people eat it up. If I bring the same food in the bowl on the right, they hardly touch it.
What difference does a bowl make?

To me, the bowl on the right looks dirty. I'm sure it's perfectly sanitary, but my first impression is unpleasant.

Yes, I thought so too. A long time ago, my mom was tapped to bring baked beans to a church food sale. She used a traditional bean pot and none of her delicious beans sold. When she went to pick up the leftovers, the woman in charge of it abruptly told her the next time not to use a chamber pot to cook in.

Whatever it is, it won't come out with scrubbing, so I doubt it would come out in the food. Besides, that part would be hidden by the food anyway.

For me I would eat from the pretty bowl on the left then steal it when it's empty. I would use the bowl on the left for greasy old auto parts.
The edge of the bowl on the right looks chipped and pitted with lots of places where germs can hide. It looks as if it may have been Fido's bowl last night. No one really knows anyone else's standards of cleanliness. If it were my bowl and in my house and I knew how clean it was, I'd have no problem eating from it.

But the people that see it don't know that it won't come out with the food so to play it safe, they stay away from it.
