What do Aussies & Brits think of the US health care system?

Count your blessings.
I am sorry you are going through such delays in AZ. SO had a cat scan with "something" on it. He was called if he could make it back to the lab immediately. Which he did.
The delay is for new patients only. Once established you can get an appointment in a timely manner. Last year my mammogram was suspicious so they had me back in for an ultrasound within a week.

One of the big problems which the UK is having is the number of foreign doctors who are not fully qualified. Previous governments were keen to have immigrants coming into the country, so accepted health workers who had not received proper training. People have died as a result. What they should have done was provide free training for British medical students and concentrated on good quality care, instead of selecting 'doctors' according to the colour of their skin.

There wasn't a specific targeted time, age, insured by an employer, poverty level, wealthy to compare. How about narrowing it down to compare age eligible for Medicare & Medicaid vs. what the equivalent is in Australia, the UK, Canada & any other country people have 1st. hand knowledge of.
In Australia everyone who is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident qualifies for Medicare and the PBS ( pharmaceutical benifits scheme)
PBS medications- which is almost all medical drugs - are at a capped price of $31.50 or $7.70 for those on a heatlh care card ( ie low income)
Some doctors, but not all, charge a gap -- ie Medicare pays most and the patients pays a proportion. Usually around $20. Sometimes GPs don't charge the gap for everyone eg might not charge children or old age pensioners. This varies by surgery

We have used medical care in both the US and Canada, believe me we have no desire to return to the US. Its not just medical care, but who knows you could be shot in a grocery store, church,a mall, movie theater, even at school. No thanks! I know there have been wild stories about long waits, we have never waited very long for medical care. Mostly we have lived in small towns and have been very happy with the medical care!

US Population: 350.5 and growing daily due to illegal immigration - and we provide care for illegal immigrants.
Canada Population: 41Million, am prayer for you all up there that your immigration laws are enforce or you will be seeing what we are seeing here South of you.

We don't walk around in fear of being shot so much since Trump won.

1 more rowCorrect me if I am wrong: AUS income tax brackets (above) as well as other taxes pay for the universal coverage. Most Americans choose what plans they want, etc. Some systems are less complex because the people are more homogeneous (think more like each other, same values, etc) and they haven't the huge population to cover. In addition the US is the only country in the world with 1/5 of all immigrants allowed in (500,000 illegal each year - and rising until this last election and between 2.0 and 2.5 MILLION legal immigrants A YEAR ).

Yes, it is getting crowded here in the US and it is stressing our boundaries of patience and resources taxpayers are willing to fund. Americans pay between 0.0 (under 15,000/yr and 50% (millionaires/corporations) a year, plus all but 7 states have income taxes of between 2.0 and 16.0, or higher depending on income. In addition all states have varying property taxes; taxes on sales and services, liquor, tobacco, gasoline. I doubt anyone wants any more health care paid for for free - especially for those who are here illegally and have criminal records.

We in the US also have this issue. Physicians can immigrate VERY easily in the US and are often required to serve in government jobs for at least 3-4 years before they can private practice. Hence, the Military Health Care System and the Veteran's Administration Health Care Systems, Public Health Service, or charity organizations and practices in poorer/more rural cities/counties have a have a larger proportion of foreign born physicians. We have many health care workers from Poland, India, Pakistan, Phillipines etc. The foreign docs and nurses rarely stay in the original required organization, but then head out to make "real" money, after their initial required service for immigration purposes.

Have worked in health care in US since 1984 and have seen the best of medicine practiced by doctors and advance practice RNs from India, China, and Japan.

Firearms and violent crime in Canada, 2022

In 2022, the rate of firearm-related violent crime was 36.7 incidents per 100,000 population, an 8.9% increase from 2021 (33.7 incidents per 100,000 population). This is the highest rate recorded since comparable data were first collected in 2009.
The increase in the rate of firearm-related violent crime from 2021 is mainly attributable to fairly significant increases in Ontario (1,016 more incidents, a rate increase of 24%), New Brunswick (64 more incidents, a rate increase of 24%) and British Columbia (194 more incidents, a rate increase of 12%).

Back in the 70s, when I was in High School we had a course subject which focused on overpopulation and what would happen by 2025 if the world didn't get a grip on overpopulation in poorer countries and politically and economically, values unstable countries.

What we discussed IS happening: those persons in those unstable, poorer countries are flocking to countries that are stable, more safe, economically successful, and have stable value systems.

Hence you are seeing more people in homeless camps in all developed countries, at least those who allow such. There simply isn't the resources to house all the illegal immigrants, or the illegal immigrants slowly (by being able to work or working harder for cash) force poorer Americans out of low cost housing. It is a problem that is going to take some VERY strong leadership and fortitude by AMERICANS to solve, but we will. It will be painful, though.

The other thing we discussed in that class back in 1970 is what animals, mammals, all creatures do when serious overcrowding and over competition for resources happens: they turn on each other and kill to survive. It is very true: look up professional level studies in "overcrowding behaviors in animals/humans". It begins with stress that creates high levels of anxiety which leads to psychotic killing behaviors.

This is news to me. All medical professionals whether trained domestically or abroad must meet strict standards set by the General Medical Council (GMC), in order to practice medicine in the UK. This includes passing stringent exams, verifying qualifications, and meeting competency requirements.

News to me, too. The US have very stringent medical board and nursing board requirements. I would imagine, though, that some bad ones slip through the cracks of any vetting organization. The problem in the US is that sometimes the culture of - say, a strict male Muslim culture foreign doctor.

Those male strict Muslim doctors really do not treat American women very well; or they are scared of American women... :ROFLMAO: . They won't say more than three words, look me in the eye, or even touch me to check my heart rate! In and out in three minutes.

Is bizarre behavior..they need a culture course on American sensitive behaviors. It is QUITE OK to laugh and joke with American women...we do not bite.:ROFLMAO: Well, other than a little nibble now and then!:ROFLMAO: I think strict Muslim men think we all are "hussies" and are going to rape them or something.....

If this were correct I would have expected it to be well known front page news, with everyone reporting on it. This statement suggests that the General Medical Council, and perhaps the government, are racially biased in regard to the recruitment of medical staff.

I seem to remember that you came to Canada, from the USA as an Immigrant, a long time ago? Is that correct ? I ask so that SF members will better understand your position regarding "personal safety in the USA ". I too refuse to travel to the USA, based on both my personal safety while there, and the actions of the US Government towards Canada. JIM.

It will be interesting to see what happens to healthcare in the US if RFK.jr. is confirmed to head the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
What could possibly go wrong with putting a lawyer in charge of healthcare instead of a doctor or scientist? In addition he was a heroin addict, had a brain worm and an affinity for picking up dead animal carcasses and taking them home.

I think he was convicted of a crime for the bear incident. It really sounds like a Saturday night live skit but unfortunately it’s true.

The same is true of American born Orthodox Jewish doctors.

Yes we came to Canada from the US in 1969, and in 1975 we became citizens. I believed that if we were enjoying the perks that we needed to become citizens. We did it the right way and became landed immigrants, I think we got in because we had young children, cause we sure didn't have any money. We have never regretted it. To our minds Canada is the greatest country in the world!!!!

Of course, Australian taxes of various sorts fund our universal health care - surely nobody was claiming or thinking otherwise

People can still choose to take out private heath cover as well or self fund surgeries or such to be seen sooner if they wish.

The size of the population makes no difference - either less people pay tax for less people or proportionately more people pay tax for more people.

Saw that announcement and just went :rolleyes:.
Am rather praying RFK Jr is NOT confirmed.
Makes me worry about who the heck is advising the President elect: Mr. Magoo??

Really? I've never noticed, I can't tell a Jew from anyone else. In fact, as a child my mother said something about "those Jews" over there. I looked at the group of people and didn't understand, because they looked just like us!

Population size not contributing to the tax base available for health care costs makes a very large difference when the non-contributing begin to outweigh the contributing portion.

Money does not grow on trees in America, either.
As America goes, so goes the world.
So we are all going to be in for longer and longer waits for less and less services funded.

Well, maybe not: no one else allows so many illegal immigrants into their system as America does. 😭
And we are accused by many in the world of being SELFISH or ISOLATIONISTS if we simply try to save ourselves from being over run by enforcing our own immigration laws.
