What do you do to improve your short term memory?

that's another thing I do...play trivia quizzes.. altho' I've had to wade through a lot that had wrong answers before I found a couple that seem to be really good ones... and save them to my favourites...

Yes. I've noticed quite a few wrong answers, but I guess that's good for our memory if we're able to catch them.

Usually after I eat, I'll relax and play a few games on my phone. My favorites are Words With Friends and Cody Cross, a different kind of crossword puzzle. I also play Color Rings puzzle, Balloon Match, Zen Words (unscramble letters to make words) and Cross Math. Lately, I've also enjoyed playing QuizLand, a trivia game with science, nature, history, society and entertainment categories. They also include cognitive math and shapes puzzles which are timed. Currently I'm in the top 2% of QuizLand players. That can change after each level. I've never gone below the top 13%.

Some of the games I play require strategies, some quick thinking and reflexes, some simply require knowledge. I learn new words in WWF and interesting "new" facts playing Cody Cross.. I feel playing each of the above games on a regular basis helps keep the cobwebs out of my brain. I recently took an in person cognitive assessment test with several parts. When I get my scores, I may get a better idea of whether or not these games really have helped. I also often try to do math in my head instead of relying on the calculator. Admittedly, none of the calculations are too difficult.

I keep up with technology and am constantly learning, have games and word puzzles on my phone that I play every day.

I’ve always been a list person and that hasn’t changed. Now though I have specific apps on my phone for different things that I need to make a list of, like AnyList for groceries, Notes app for general To Dos, Reminders for repeat monthly things like the dogs’ flea, tick and heart worm medications etc.

Another thing I’ve always done. If I suddenly remember something that needs to go on a list and I’m not where my phone is, I’ll grab the nearest item and toss it on the floor. The association of that item to what I need to jot down helps me remember what it was!

Ha ! I do that too... I'll place something on the front door mat so It reminds me of something else....:)

I am a crossword nut..I love crosswords.. Now I live on my own , I have a crossword puzzle book in the loo... and even if I'm just going for a quick visit I'll fill in a few clues... ..I particualr like Cryptic puzzles

On this forum I play word games every day..... and another thing I do to keep the short term memory sharp as I can.. because really I have a terrible memory... but I will watch a TV show ... or a Youtbe video..of say a real life court case.. sometime in the evening...

Later when I got to bed, just as I'm getting ready for sleep.. I try to recall the names of the accused.. the defence, and prosecution lawyers ..the judge.. the witesses names etc...

....with the tv show... I try to remember all the characters names that I saw in that particular episode, and then match them to their real names...

ie.......Sam Malone - Ted Danson

Rebecca Howe... Kirstie alley

Cliff Claven - John Ratzensburger

Woodie Boyd - Woodie Harleson-

..and so on.. ......different show every evening...
I didn’t realize this forum has games. I’ll have to investigate. Thank you!

I play word and other games. I recite the multiply times often on. Each morning I tell myself what day it is and date,
My biggest fear is dementia and and Big Al. I am very good at remembering dates and numbers, that is good to me.
I have forgotten small things, like where is my cane, glasses or phone. But now I mention what I am doing at the time in order to stop that. Such as, laying phone on table by my chair. Anyways works for me so far:)

True, and i will look it up if i thought it wasn't right. I use the same technique i did when taking multiple choice tests in classes. Don't even look at answers till after i've thought of one or have no idea. In classes i would put my left hand over the choices.

Also a lot of the video ones have too many that can be figured out even if you don't know for sure. Which is also exercising our brains. But some times it seems like the more difficult they claim it is the easier it actually is. Things like asking which French city is known for something and 3 of the 4 cities are clearly NOT French, but German, Polish, Czech.

For me meditation had been a big help. During my morning one i review my goals for the day. And the self hypnosis aspect of my practice has me to where if i 'forget' from one room to another i have only to ask why i'm where i am and i remember, used to i'd have go back to where i thought of doing/getting whatever.

But i play word games, and matching ones. A favorite being Bubble Wars, because it also exercises spacial skills, considering trajectories that at first go away from target to clear an obstacle then bounce off a 'wall' to go back where it needs to go. (As one might in billiards, pool.)

I also think we have to not obsess about things--stress just makes everything worse. And everyone can have lapses when their mind is stressed or even just thinking about other things at same time we got up to go refill a cup or grab a snack, or the dog asks to go out when we stand up to do something and oh, there's a rainbow. Now what did i get up for this time?

I am a firm believer in strenuous exercise. It's extremely important to have a healthy metabolism and cardiovascular system for your brain to function efficiently.

Word puzzles and mental exercises are good, but they need a healthy base to be truly effective.

Great idea! I am always forgetting actors' names and the name of the film as well.

It would be difficult. But the different kinds if exercise you can do is unlimited. You would have to get very creative. Isometrics might be a viable option. Anything you can do that will increase your heart rate.

My brother has been paralyzed in a wheelchair for 45 years. He always made an effort to exercise however he could. I know it is tough on him, but he doesn't want to become more disabled than he already is.

it's all good advice...

I have to admit this last couple of years I've slowed down a lot where exercise is concerned. I've just really been too lazy tbh..altho'I do have OA in my knees, and lower back issues .. I'm still perfectly capable of some exercises.

I have a treadmill here at home.. and I used to be very good about walking on it regularly.. now not so much... just once a week usualy now.

but I am always on the move.. I'm fortunate that I'm not disabled, and I can climb stairs in my normal day to day life.. as I do many times during any 24 hours... I'm also a very fast walker.. so when I'm out and about I don't walk slowly...

During the day.. and apparently according to the experts this ony has to be done once a day.. and that is that I stand on one leg for 60 seconds..( they suggest 30 seconds).. and then the other for the same time... .. research was carried out over many years , and they discovered that anyone who is not disabled. who can't stand on one leg for a minimum of 30 seconds without putting the other foot down, or falling over is at a much higher risk of Dementia..

Gone however because of the knee situation is my beloved mountain trekking...

I constantly play word games on my phone. Not sure it is working very well because I put the garbage out yesterday thinking it was Sunday rather than Saturday. Hubs said "Why did you already put the garbage out?" I also woke up this morning thinking it was Tuesday rather than Sunday. I blame it on retirement and one day looking just like the other. 🤷‍♂️
