What do you do when you can't sleep?

I have a white noise machine that can help. Other times, I just wait it out, lying quietly until it happens. Getting up would only make me more wide awake.
I have one of those machines. It can change the sound over from white noise to different types of fan noise. I use the fan selection. White noise frequency doesn't sufficiently cover up sounds from the street.

A few of the doctors I go to have these setup in their offices next to the wall separating one waiting room from another. I guess these help cut down waiting patients from listening in to any private doctor/patient conversation in the next room.

And that is exactly what puts one to sleep .
I start out sleep actually listening to something and falling asleep on it. But then, when I wake up, I can hear it again but this time Can't fall asleep on it. I switch to meditation music on cable. Sometimes it's good, but calming. Or it's bland & boring. I usually, not always, fall back asleep. What works best is that and half a valium.

I usually don't have problems falling asleep, but staying asleep is another story. I do not look at the clock, unless it is in my mind to get up and go to the living room.
Usually, in between getting up to go to the BR I'll just lay in bed, get as comfortable as I can, and try to make my mind blank....

Since I am an author, I will write stories in my head. The other night I wrote the beginning of a really good one. I never get past the first few paragraphs. And I never remember what I 'wrote'.

Works every time.
Oh my gosh, because of writing poems I go through nights of half-asleep times of trying in my mind to revise paragraphs I dream I've written, over and over again, keeping myself from falling fully asleep. I finally completely awaken, shake off the dream and eventually fall back to sleep.

First order of business is to go tinkle. Ain't gonna be able to get back to sleep when my bladder is screaming at me. Then, it's usually Kindle time. If my sinuses are acting up, I'll get up, sit on the couch, and read.
Yea, so what else is life going to throw at us...death? We're ready! 😅

Small bowl of oatmeal with cherries and tablespoon of tart cherry juice concentrate, 7.5 mg of melatonin. Then put on a radio drama that shuts off when done with no artificial light (closed iPad).

I listen to the Dragnet Radio episodes (or other old time) or Unshacked episodes.

I used to watch it all the time and if memory serves me it was followed by Adam 12 , perhaps before but the two police shows ran one after the other .

I have to say surprised you listen to Dragnet because Joe Friday is beyond anal , I vividly remember his character .

Well, tonight I'm going to try sleeping in the other bed. I've tried the recliner and the queen bed, no luck, so I'm headed for the king bed. Also, took a gabapentin to help with the foot pain.

Nothing helps me get to sleep ... so I try to think of nothing.

Strangely, if I just let images of people's faces float in and out of my mind, that helps.
Usually I don't even know the people at all. My mind just makes them up.
And as I watch my mind make up images without words or thoughts, I usually drift off.

I'd bet images of other things might drift me off too.
Might try landscape images. Just let my mind wander through forests and glades.

Basically, I just try to turn off words and thoughts.

It’s not the getting to sleep, it’s staying asleep. I hate going to bed because I know the night will be disturbed. My overloaded mind does best with something dull, yet interesting enough to keep my attention. I have a variety of podcasts. One of them is I Can’t Sleep. The best remedy is a sleeping pill.

I will surf the internet and/or play the one game I know how to play on the pooter....Solitaire....until I get sleepy.
If I'm having trouble falling asleep I will also use a sleep mask as any light will awake me.
I only sleep well when I am next to ms gamboolgal and holding her tight. Getting frisky is a sure way to put me and her both out for a good long while.
And since we normally do not have to be up at any particular time, we can sleep late.
