What do you do with money over $5 you find in public?

Forgot this one. When I worked in a nursing home laundry, I was cleaning the lint trap and found a very tightly folded bill, shaped like a triangle. I couldn't believe it when it was a 50 dollar bill. I could have so easily kept it. No one would have known. I worked alone and could really have used that money in the late 80's. I turned it in to one of the charge nurses. Being honest has got me nowhere.

I'm getting cheap. I never used to take any change that was left in the self check out change dispenser. A few weeks ago, there were some pennies, I took them. Once at a grocery check out there was over 80 in cash left. Someone must have used a $100.00 bill. I turned it in.
The loose change would probably be considered Abandoned property. The 80.00 would most likely be classified as what the law terms Mislaid property.

I would try to get the money back if possible for $20 or more. Just did this a few years back in a grocery store parking lot - told the customer service desk to hold it just in case it was claimed or otherwise buy some treats for their break room.
But for small change I of course just keep it. Many years back I remember finding a fair amount of coins that showed up in the parking lot where I worked as the many layers of winter snow melted away - paid for some of my coffee!

If it were relatively small amount in a large open public place ( like on the street or floor of a shopping complex)I would keep it. If it were large amount, say, over $100, I would turn it in.
If it were anything over $5 and in a place like a Drs surgery or sports club I would hand it in. Somewhere the owner is more likely to know where it was and ask for it.

When my son was an apprentice painter he would often leave notes inside his overalls. When I did his washing I'd always check the pockets and keep the money aside. He said I didn't need to give him the money but I said he had worked hard for his wages and that could pay for his lunches.
When I used to go walking with my neighbour many years ago, twice she found $20. bills on the footpath and would pocket it. If I had found the money I would have gone halves with her. I did find $50. one morning in my driveway and didn't notice anyone looking anxious. I went inside and asked my husband if he had lost any money, which he didn't, then I would go halves in it.
