What I love about church:

I love the smell of the candles as I light them.
I love the chanting and the rich art in the icons.
I love the sermons given by the priest that are thought-provoking and wise.
I love standing next to people in the pew and smiling a greeting at them
I love singing in the choir
I love it when people who know me come up to me and hug me and we talk.
I love the community feeling afterward when we meet at coffee hour and catch up on news.
I love the holidays, those are special times like Christmas and Easter.
I love the philanthropic organizations within the church that help the poor or needy.

What do you Love about church?

PS I started this thread when I realized how much church was important to me.

Everything you said @palides2021 plus the incense.

I love a good sermon that is well-organized, doesn't only pull quotes from the Bible alone but relates them to real life. I hate it when preachers use sermons to talk about themselves, or make comments to their "insiders" (those church people who have been at the church with them for ___ years), and talk about their personal lives.

Usually when I have seen this it is some Man talking about his Wife and how "She makes sure I don't do that, hardee-har-har. Cuz I'm such a dope, har-har!"

That false self-effacing humor when, hey, it's Sunday and we did not come there for your try out for the Comedy Club. If we want comedy, we can go see the pros.

I really hate it when sermons morph into the Pastor or Preacher taking out some time to tell 50 to 1,500 people in attendance ALL ABOUT HIM. I don't know about the others, but I did not get myself to church this morning to learn all about HIM!

Oh dear....I have gone off track. SO, I like a GOOD sermon that is NOT all about the preacher. I cannot tell you how many churches I've visited where the speaker veers off into talking about themselves and their lives.

I love some good singing and music that is not just one or two verses of a song sung over and over again. Many of the old hymns have actual, genuine verses with many words and many thoughts expressed. Go figure!

I did love the smell of the incense. I also loved the Benediction, those of the Catholic faith know what I'm talking about. I loved it and singing the hymns that went with it. I haven't been to church since my husband passed away, I well up with tears and have to get out of the place. To me church is sitting in a beautiful park and listening to the birds singing and talking to my God, He is closer to me then, than in a church.

The only thing I like about 'church' is the architecture. It reflected the status of the people and the place and you could learn a lot by wandering round the graveyard. However as an organisation, I think that it was established as a means of control and sought to tell people how to live.
There are few church buildings in this area and many have been re-purposed as houses, restaurants etc.. It's good to see these relics of the past being maintained for practical rather than mystical purposes.

At my church we have a wonderful senior minister, Todd who came to us 3 yrs ago,he's 54. I'm amused he is younger than most of us long time church members. We've never had a minister that young His preaching style is very different which is refreshing.Todd's sermons at times are mixed with humor, once in awhile makes a reference something political but never mentions the person''s name. The sermons last between 10-15 min
I love our choir and the music they sing every week. Our choir director, Garrett is very talented, he's been with us for 13 yrs, he's young 38
I love during 'pass the peace' give other church members hugs if I know them others I shake their hands
I love that our church has been actively involved within the community for many yrs, continues to do so

I love Gothic Cathedrals. I love the exterior; I love the interior. I love the peacefulness. I love the love and devotion that built them. I love the history behind them. I love it's relevance throughout time.

I am your opposite. I am repelled by cathedrals. I prefer a small local church where we can come as we are, without having to hide our true selves. My church is a multipurpose building which serves different groups of people participating is various activities, not just on Sunday, but every day of the week. We have a community garden at the front and behind the main building, a child care centre and eight small units for seniors whose financial means are very limited.

Although the congregation is small, we work together to build the Kingdom in our neighbourhood. This is what I love about my church.

I once fellowshipped at a church called The Church of Christ ; always liked the name heh - simple and to the point? One evening as we worshipped a young intoxicated man came in and sat down - he listened for a while and then shouted out to the preacher " I don't agree with that you just said etc etc and then he apologized saying " sorry just ignore me I am an alcoholic and drunk and should really be here at all"

- Our minister stopped his preaching and said " that's ok - wots you name?" the man gave his name and then the preacher said you are just the sorta person that should be here ; needs to be here and are most welcome now and always" - that was the sorta church I liked!!

I don’t go often, mainly due to my being around people phobia. The last church I went to was when my brothers mother in law passed away.( about 4 years ago ) There literally were hundreds of people there. It was a fair sized church and packed.

I like the stained glass windows, especially when the sun comes shining through.
I like the singing of hymns . In fact, I love singing in a church. I actually sing fairly loud.
I like how the voices echo in the church due to the vaulted ceilings ( the acoustics)
I like how most people dress up in their Sunday best.
I like how most people try and be polite.
I like listening to the sermon from the minister
I like how I feel after going to church ( minus the paranoia of being around a lot of people)
