What do you put down your garbage disposal?

Are there rules about this? I was told never to put meat down it, but now I wonder why not.

I put any food that can be chopped up into the garbage disposal... even raw vegetables. Never things like shrimp tails or egg shells that are solid.

I did once make the mistake of putting an entire package of raw brussels sprouts that had gone bad in the disposal and the sink backed up for a couple of days. The water was milky and it smelled. I contacted a plumber but the issue went away when they were finally all chopped up. I'll never do that again!

When I first had a disposal, lo these many years ago, I thought it was OK to put anything down it.

I learned better very quickly. I put some raw fish skin down it. Little did I know that they just turned into a ball and just "bounced" around in the disposal every time i used it while everything else was being ground up.

It only took a couple of days for the ball o' skins to start stinkin'. It took me another day or so to discover where that smell was coming from. Then I had the pleasure of fishing around in there and get the stink-ball out. Yuck.

I don't learn fast but I do learn well.

Thanks for the tips. I asked because my husband put about a pound of ham down it yesterday and I was under the impression you don't do meat ---probably because of why Jujube's fish turned out to be a bad thing. Time and my nose will tell.
