What food reminds you of your childhood?

Halvah, which my sister tried to get me to eat by dipping it in chocolate. I spit it out, and she cracked up. I was around five. Funny thing is, as I type this, there's a container of halvah in my fridge. I have loved it for most of my adult life.

A lot of meat dishes trigger childhood memories, but being vegetarian from twenty-five, and vegan from forty, I never eat them, anymore.

Artichokes: My sister and I would fight for the heart. Now, I make one for Janet, one for me. No fight. Just had them a few hours ago.

Matzo: Brings back fond memories of seders with my grandparents.

so many to choose --- coconut cake slab mum used to bake -
kippers remind me of Saturday afternoon as a kid ..
bread pudding full of fruit --another of my mothers dishes ..
chocolate custard on chocolate pudding -reminds me of school dinners ...

Corn Flakes cereal with sugar sprinkled on top. As an adult, I do not like corn flakes. I was grateful back then but as an adult, I am blessed to have other breakfast choices. We ate other foods for breakfast but I remember those Corn Flakes the most.

Firstly my Mum's lovely dinners and one she'd do me when I was ill and that was a middle or wing of skate with mash and home made parsley sauce and I called it my "invalid dinners". Shell fish high teas on a Sunday with celery and watercress and nice desserts

Then school dinners which were dire back in the 50's Ghastly meals brought in from God knows where in big metal containers. Disgusting tapiocre or sago puds for afters. Never ever had nice school meals😩

Puffed rice cereal (yuck), liver and onions (double yuck), vegetable marrow (triple yuck).

Foods that were good: mom's apple pie, coconut cream pie, homemade bread, whole coconuts and tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwich.

My mom called it "birdnest". It was several layers of corn mashed potatoes and ground beef. The top layer was mashed potatoes, which had this baked crust consistency. She also made tuna in cream sauce with a bread like top. She used this big square aluminum baking pan. I remember the pan more than the meals, because every time I saw that pan, I knew I was going to have something good to eat.
