What happened to my winter squash?

Since the vines dried up, I decided to harvest the squash. They looked okay laying there, but when I picked them up, 3 of the 4 showed signs of rot to varying degrees. I'm not sure what caused it - the hot dry summer, animal or insect activity, bad soil, disease or something else. So they wouldn't be a total waste, I took the 2 worst ones, cut out the rotted areas and cooked them. While they were edible, they didn't have the sweetness I remember from the squash I took the seeds from.

It's not enough to cut out the rotten, the whole thing is infected with rot even if you can't see it. I wouldn't have knowingly eaten it, but then, I don't eat squash anyway.

Looks like there is some nice eatable parts. I love squash. I like it in stir fries, and by itself with some butter and sometimes brown sugar.

Thought I would share what I found yesterday on my walk. These were growing on a fallen tree. Got 4 lbs. They are Oyster Mushrooms.
