What has gotten better (or worse) in your life time? Starting with food!

I am still desperately looking for the orange-y egg yolks of my youth. Eggs like that were so flavourful compared to what I buy in the store. I buy free range but have learned in the meantime that this simply means the chickens roam the barn floor instead of being caged. Certainly a humane progression but the flavour of the eggs is the same because they eat the same seed.

Excerpt from the Today Show:

"While egg yolk's shade may not impact its health value, many chefs, farmers and home cooks swear that the yolk's color does actually affect the flavor of the egg — and the dish it's used in. The more vibrant the shade, the more vibrant the taste, they say."

:) Chickens are fed marigold petals for the bright orange yolks.

I think pancake mixes have gotten better. Way back, they were pretty blah. Now, there are some nice whole grain mixes.

Worse foods would be the meats raised in confined spaces. Chicken these days is what I call "moosh meat".

We got so tired of the nightly agonizing and endless rounds of "Anything you want is fine," "No, you pick"... that I made a permanent menu and stuck it on the fridge. Now we know it's going to be pasta on Monday, burritos on Tuesday, etc. and don't worry about it. It's all subject to change if someone has a special hankering for something.
I suggested that exact thing to my husband and he kind of put the kabash on it, saying it was too restrictive. Sigh. Sounds like a wonderful idea to me!

My mom only had one night that was always the same...Friday was steak night. Funny how my sister and I were always home on Friday!

Strange how our bodies (minds?) work. I had pains for many years in my neck and back from an injury suffered in basic training. I progressed from Tylenol, to Tylenol # 1 (prescription free in Canada), then # 2, 3, 4. Only mild effect on the pain. Tried pure codeine, results even worse, they were totally useless, then finally Oxycocet (Oxycodone with Tylenol). And my neck and back kept hurting.

As I wrote, my doctor was reluctant to take things further, so I finally took myself off them in frustration. What's the use taking something that made doctors and pharmacists look in suspicion, if it didn't help!

Here is the kicker, and I swear it's the truth: My pain has lessened considerably since I stopped taking Oxycodone! I now only take some ordinary Tylenol once in a while but without really trusting them, only guided by the thought: the pain might possibly be worse without them!
Man, that's awesome!

While I worked, I just took Motrin. That's the only thing that worked for me. Then I had a couple surgeries, and I didn't have to take anything for almost a year. The surgeries repaired some injuries.

Then all of a sudden, I started having severe pain in my lower back and my legs and feet. Then I had spells when my legs just went totally numb, plus restless leg syndrome and excruciating leg and foot cramps multiple times a day.

Turns out all that is from a deformed nerve root in my spine, something I was born with that gradually got worse. That can't be fixed, so I take the pain medication. I still have pain but at least it's tolerable for a few hours a day, and those other symptoms occur rarely now.

My mother never added garlic to our meals, and you could only buy olive oil from the chemist. When she made meat dishes there was always plenty of curry powder to give it flavour. I have just started eating Premium Kimchi, a delicious cabbage meal that can be added to any dish.

What's better is being fortunate to have access to good food. There are farms in my area that raise their own cattle, pigs, lamb, chicken, and turkey. Other farmers grow veggies and fruit that I enjoy. I spend on food because what I eat is important to me.

What's worse is being widowed and facing the reality that I'll probably have to live the rest of my life alone with no one to love and not being loved.

WE never had garlic in the house at all.... and to this day I rarely use it, altho' I have it here... I like the taste I just don't want to have stinky breath..

Useless fact :.. The Queen never ate Garlic..it was completely banned from her kitchens, and not permitted by overseas chefs to cook anything with Garlic for he... for the same reason with regard to smelly breath
I avoid garlic too but use a little garlic powder once in awhile. Garlic gets into your sweat glands and there is nothing worse than smelling someone who eats too much garlic on a hot summer day! The queen was right about that!

Other than the guy at the concert., I haven't ever been around someone whose body reeked of garlic. My husband worked with a young man who was eating raw garlic for his health. He had been eating it before he worked out, got cleaned up at the gym & would then come into work. The guys told him to stop.

Usually brushing your teeth & using mouthwash takes care of the usual garlic smell in people. Others just may not be able to eat it & this is how their bodies react to it, sort of like an allergy. After reading a few things, I think certain individuals have a metabolism that may cause this issue.

My father used to say he hated garlic and never use it. I always put it in my vegetable soup. He loved the soup and had no idea garlic was in it.

I think fruits have definitely gotten much worse. They may be bigger and they may be firmer for shipping, but the taste is so off that they are not worth eating and younger people have no idea what they are missing.

Personally, I miss the frosting mixes that came boxes. They tasted so much better than the stuff they ONLY sell in Plastic Cups. Sheeeesh. No options.
