What have we come to?

Home is a good place to rest, dine, spa and recharge, but not a good place to entertain.
For me, it’s not the place as much as the people.

I find people that need to challenge everything I say to be tedious and annoying.

We should all be able to disagree or express ourselves without being disagreeable.

Let me first say that I don't condone any of this.

I have a good friend (70+ y/o) who lives in Seattle. She is very liberal. However, her brother and sister-in-law are very conservative Evangelicals. Why they got together for July 4th is beyond me. Anyway, they all apparently had too much to drink. They didn't discuss politics at all, but all of a sudden the brother said "isn't it great to live in the Land of the Free"? My friend responded that we are not free and the argument ensued. The sister-in-law finally said "why don't you move somewhere else". That was the last straw. My friend said she was going home. The sister-in-law said there was no way she was driving in her condition and ran off with her purse!

My friend chased her, demanding to get her purse back, and ultimately slapped her in the face! The sister-in-law pulled her hair!

This all surprised me because my friend is very much an Empath, but I guess alcohol and strong beliefs do strange things. The division in our country is causing people to act like children, even people in the same family.:(
I think the stress of the past couple years is making people a little crackers. My dad is very political and mouthy about it. He had gotten a housekeeper and made a remark and an argument ensued and then he tells me he no longer has a housekeeper. I was like for God sake dad!

Only in a perfect world.

Younger people seem to have an easier time coping with the stress of the past couple of years, or is it just the one I'm around? I continue feeling a little shocked by all of the changes.

I feel ya on that one Patricia. I can count the times I've entertained here on one hand and I've been here for 51 years (as of tomorrow). I'd actually rather treat family or friends to restaurant meals than to host them here. It's a lot less stressful and so far has always been an enjoyable experience.

I think that both Canada and the US are divided on several issues. However, I believe that we are lucky to be born in those countries. No, I don't mean to be in LA or New York but there are lots of good places in the US with decent people working hard and just trying to get along and do their best. Ditto: for Canada. Maybe I would never want to live in Toronto but Toronto is not all of Canada. There are hundreds of small towns with good descent people working hard for a living.

If you don't love the US and you don't love Canada, then where you gonna go buddy or sister? China, Russia, Columbia, Sri Lanka? Not for me! You might bitch and complain about the USA or Canada, but when the day is done, there is no place like home. We just don't know how luck we are to live here in North America.
you could be luckier and live in the UK..where no-one gets Beech slapped, for talking about their opposing political opinion :sneaky::p

An outsider looking in. So, so many conversations contain Leftist and Radical Right.
I have been watching this situation deteriorate for so long now, can there be no Political discussions without going to the extreme?
We have Labor and Liberal but by no means is there the hatred between the two as displayed in US Politics.
same here..only it's 3 main parties...

That's probably because they have their mouths full and are in public! But, I agree.

There are a few people I know not to mention my thoughts on issues, but most with different opinions seem easy enough to have a conversation. The entire big picture seems overwhelming these days. How does anyone know where to start?
Just my possibly biased opinion, but I believe it‘s a personality issue. Some are motivated by logic and are willing to listen to opposing views. If convinced, they are open to new ideas. Others may be guided more by emotion than logic and are emotionally wedded to an overarching point of view. Logic is wasted on those people, and can trigger an angry emotional response.

I blame it on leaders who purposely fan the fire, preying on people's emotions telling them what they are supposed to be outraged about. Get people angry and you've got a mob, and our leaders want to lead a mob. It's dangerous, but so what? They get to be the leader of the mob, because they are basically nobodies without it. Eventually people get hurt and killed. We already have one toe in that wallow.

The way things are here in the U.S. lately reminds me a lot of the way things were leading up to the 19th century Civil War. And although I'm thoroughly for freedom of the press, some of the media coverage has seemed to fan the flames sometimes.
What gets me is the bias.. what is said on any particular topic depends on who is saying it.
It's always been around, but the internet has made it worse- a much wider ability to spread viewpoint-biased information.

I don't disagree, but Portugal is supposed to be pretty nice and I have friends who have moved there for retirement and love it. I also have friends who have lived in Costa Rica, now in Dallas, and still have a home there. I love my life in the US, but whether I will continue to love it has a lot to do with what happens in 2024. ;)
