What Have You Been Up To Lately?

I could swear I started a similar thread last year, but can't find it in the search. Somehow, I often seem to miss the What Are You Doing Today thread or if I post in it early in the day, I wind up not doing much of what I intended.

~We attended our family reunion on August 19th & 20th. More about that to follow in a separate post. A couple of weeks ago, went to the Hoboken waterfront park with my BFF who was up here from Florida.

~Yesterday, I continued purging and reorganizing my storage closet which allowed me to add boxes that were in the studio room, thus making more room for my son to store stuff in there. Purchasing the new shelving unit really helped. The big tote that was in that spot will go on the patio.

~Saturday, we surprised my son. I plotted with his friend to get him to the Grand Lux Cafe for a belated birthday celebration. I had been telling him I wanted to take him there since July (his BD month) and he kept saying we'll go. I know he likes going there because he loves their avocado wontons. When he left the house Saturday I asked where he was going. He said to storage, then he had to meet his friend. I said well, okay...have fun.

I was partially dressed to go out, but was looking like I do around the house with a skirt and T shirt on. After he left, I put on a blouse, my scarf and earrings. His friend lives out of town, so he had no idea she'd be swinging by to pick me up, I'm sure.

The look in his eyes (he was wearing a mask) and his reaction when he walked in and saw me was priceless. Restaurant prices are insane now, but at least the Cafe gives a lot of food. He and I got desserts for the first time. A slice of key lime pie was about $9.

We purposely left room for our desserts and I wound up bringing most of my food home, including half the pie. It was a delightful dinner experience....good food and fun conversation.

~I've also been doing a lot of shopping both online and at brick and mortar stores. My son brought home my order from Shoprite yesterday and we're going to Costco Saturday morning after my lab appointment.

What have you been doing? Working on any projects? Did you take any trips?

Staying busy is always a good idea. I've a cousin near my age (75) who deliberately stays busy with the most mundane of things. But, busy she is and happy that way. No sitting about harking for the past or wishing for a better tomorrow. Instead living for today and enjoying everything and every moment about it.

Thanks for sharing your news and catching up, @OneEyedDiva .That was nice what you did for your son's birthday! Glad you enjoyed yourselves!

Something a little different today. Wanted to surprise my wife with a day out to just enjoy time together. Started with champagne brunch that featured prime rib so cooking was off the list of regular Saturday routine. Then a few hundred to gambol with. That turned into a nice surprise. She hit a royal on a progressive $1.00 slot machine for $5,444.00 The least bet you can wager is $1.00 but to win the most it takes $5.00 per bet. Then a few minutes after collecting that taxable win she hit 4 aces playing at 50cents or $2.50 a hand for a non taxable $1,000.00 Played a little more and came home with $6,200.00 plus $83.00 set aside for tip money next time we eat out. 6 piles of $1000.00

That win is all going to be used for fun, that is what we retired to do, hoarding money just isn't what our last years are about.

What a fantastic surprise you planned...then you got surprised too! 🤑🤑 How lucky Mrs. Knight is to have you as her husband!

Thank you Diva for your kind words.

Starting out married life in poverty but not realizing at the time we were poor set the tone for our life together. We worked together to make our years in retirement as good as possible. It's these little surprises that pop up when least expected that tells me were succeeding in what we wanted for our last years.

We just got back from a trip to New England. The leaves were just peaking on our last couple of days in western Massachusetts however Vermont was pretty. Also, New York and Pennsylvania on the way back.
We last loved Manchester Village in Vt. We had a nice Thai meal and fun shopping at the Orvis outlet.1000002551.jpg1000002499.jpg1000002497.jpg

Trying not to worry myself to death. Doggy seems to be doing better than before. My car broke down in the garage. The steering went kaput. It's parked partially in someone else's parking space but he was still able to park. I am worried about AAA being able to get the car out of the garage. It will hardly steer. I had a heck of a time trying to park it.

Thanks for reading my rant. It's driving me up the wall.

I am surprised at how much time I spend on the internet. I am a widower and alone.
That is very sad that you are both a widower and now alone. Here's hoping that the virtual friendship you have here supports you and makes you feel less isolated.

I've had a short sabbatical away from the forum and I must say a big thank you to those of you who sent me a personal message. It's very flattering to be thought of so, much appreciated.

The lady and I have been out and about. We got all dressed up 1930's style for a Great Gatsby evening, it was the perfect excuse for me to wear my zoot suit. What a fabulous event it was.

Following on from that we enjoyed another similar evening dancing the night away to Band 21. They are a twenty-one member big band, hence their name. Somehow we also found time to join members of the MG car club on their Autumn Run. What an event, so many vintage MG cars and so many compliments on our vintage attire.

One of the things that I have rekindled now that I have finally retired is hand writing letters. My handwriting was something that I was taught as a small boy, it gets complimented regularly, but best of all, when a company, like, for instance, a utility company, gets all anal, instead of an email, I write a handwritten letter in italic script. It never fails to get a response. Here's a sample:

To that end I have joined The Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society. They are holding a birthday celebration this coming week and have invited me to demonstrate, (take that as show off,) my handwriting credentials.

Later in the week, we shall be off to another night out to dance to The Boogie Bumpers, at the Community Centre, Milford on Sea.

Later still, we have tickets to see The Salamander Swing Band, and we have just had confirmed, our tickets for The Jive Aces. It's good to be back and thank you to One Eyed Diva for the thread.

I am contemplating making a baked chicken dinner. I don't want the chicken to go bad. It just defrosted.

I was so pleased to get my groceries delivered yesterday. It felt good to let someone else do the shopping 🛒 and bring a half ton of groceries up here. I made sure to give her a good tip to show my appreciation.

As for my carr it may not be fixable and I am truly tired of spending money on repairs. I may call the junk car people if it's not fixable or would cost too much. The place I'm taking it to lets you make payments but they keep the car until it's all paid. I've never done that before but I'm low on money now.

I may have to start taking cabs again. I don't really mind. Thanks for reading. I needed to get that out.
