What I spent on food (and a few sundries) in 2019

I just added up what I spent in the local grocery stores (for a single person) and the few times I ate out. The total came to $2636.94 - that comes to just over $7 a day (but that isn't just food for me - it includes cat food and litter and various sundries purchased along with food). I think it's down a little from last year.

I still have to figure mine out, doing it today. I'm sure it will be a lot more than yours. But, it all depends on your lifestyle. I have many cats and like to try out new and healthy recipes but never eat out or buy take-out. You only had one cat until recently. What about cooking, or do you mostly buy convenience foods?

I can cook, but in doing so, I usually buy "prepared" items like bagged salad mix and canned soup, although I say in all modesty, I can make a beef barley veggie soup that is almost edible. I do eat a fair amount of "junk" food and ones high in carbs. I could probably save some if I stayed away from Job Lots and didn't buy expensive seltzer (sometimes it's $1 or more for a liter bottle) but I like to sip it, especially in the summer. A lot of what I bought wasn't absolutely necessary. I eat a fair amount of sandwiches and I save on bread by getting it free at the senior center (the grocery store across the street sends over day old bread almost every day). Sometimes that "artisan" bread can get quite expensive.

My weakness is bread and cheese. I try to avoid bread by simply not making it, but I refuse to give up cheese, especially the parmesan block cheese. And cheese is expensive. I could cut my food bill a lot if I ate simple meals, but I love trying recipes, it's one of my very few hobbies.
