What if existence were a continuum of being?

Who are what were we before birth, life, death and beyond? If I am unhappy with life, why should I expect anything different after I die. Heaven is not a proven refuge after death, unless heaven is what we it.

Could be reincarnation where life extends itself after death into another life form. What if the spirit does not return in another earthly life form but into something different that we are unaware of? I believe the essence of a being is permanent and grows beyond our understanding of life.

Mr. Ed, Pretty deep stuff you are talking about.

As I have grown older, I have come to believe something much less complex happens when we die. I think there are only two real possibilities of what happens when we die.

1. Nothing, we die, we are gone and we don't know it! Outcome for us is nothing, we are just gone. I don't like this possibility, but it is nothing to fear, since you are just gone, no pain, no sorrow, just nothing...you only remain in the minds of those who knew you.

2. Your spirit goes somewhere real nice! I like this one and I do not fear going to hell. I believe in God, and in his goodness, he would never let me go to hell. What happens beyond this is yet for me to discover, but I know it would be nothing bad.

Therefore, I don't really worry about death or even fear it!

I go with No.1.

In the words of the late, great B.B.King..

Hey, everybody, let's have some fun
You only live but once
And when you're dead you're done, so
Let the good times roll, let the good times roll
I don't care if you're young or old
Get together, let the good times roll

Well put, except there are a few people for whom I think #2 shouldn't be so nice, a few should go to hell.

That said I think #1 is most likely, and it does not worry me a bit.

My position is pretty much what you have outlined. I too am content with the life that has been given to me and have no fear of what will happen when my life is over.

IMO, the "essence of a being", is not some philosophical mumbo jumbo idea, but rather in the physical realm. What is science reality, is within neural systems of all Earth animalia that have neural tubes, exists a chemical energy field plus electromagnetic field around neurons that due to oscillating standing and traveling brain wave fields has evolved to become what is vaguely described as mind. Once the neural system organic container for that field ceases to exist, so does the field unless some Ultimate Intelligent Entity has figured out how to transfer those fields into an effective non-organic container with similar impedance structures. Otherwise dead is gone for eternity, an ultimate sad reality indeed for any loving intelligent entities as we humans who love life and existence.

The answer to the thread title is ..yes...our current life is just an episode in our existence. We planned this one and, when it ends, we take a break and then start a new life in a different body.
All wrong-doing has to be accounted for, and punished. That punishment has to take place where it happened, in this world. This is why many spirits choose not to return, they prefer to manipulate humans to do their bidding.

I think reincarnation sounds scary -- much more so than death. I think death is lights out forever. Death doesn't scare me, but how I die matters to me very much. My goal is not in a nursing home, and not when I'm in a lot of pain (painless is much preferred), and not when I've got dementia, etc..

It's not like we would get to choose our nationality or parents and family, body type, intelligence, talents, and so forth.

My luck, I'd come back as a person born to cruel parents in a country full of starving people, doomed to be short waisted forever, and have bad hair, short legs, look terrible in hats, have no talents and not enough intelligence to suit me, etc. Worse, what if I came back as a rat? Or a domesticated animal at the mercy of its owners?

Oh the horror.

Existence could be anything, a state unknown but existence just the same

What I find interesting is the occasional report of someone having a "near death" experience....and coming back. Then, too, many of the worlds religions tout reincarnation. Hinduism, in India, has its "sacred cows", which some believe are the "souls" of those who led excellent lives. Stray dog in Thailand are looked on by some, as being the "reward" for being a total "A$$hole" in their previous life.

No one knows what happens when we die...not even the Pope. All one can do, IMO, is to lead an honest and responsible life, and hope that there is something good beyond our present existence.

The age of the universe comprises all the time that has ever existed. That's a lot of time to not even notice you don't exist. I didn't even get bored. How many billions of years will there be after I die? There is no unit of time small enough to measure the experience. Not even a blip.
