What is a "soul"?

In the Bible, the term "soul" should always be interpreted from the original Hebrew text. Along with "worm" and "spirit" are terms of potential science in the book as would be viewed by advanced beings. One's that religions have ignorantly misunderstood. Multicellular animal life on earth, both invertebrates with notochords and vertebrates with spinal cord backbones, are essentially from electrolyte based water neural perspectives, evolved segmented worms. Within Earth animal life, neural systems are complex oscillating electromagnetic fields. In humans, that is also the seat of consciousness. So the two below scriptures are how an ultimate intelligence advanced race might speak to primitives knowing they would not understand the term worm.

Isaiah 41:14 says, “‘Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob, little Israel, do not fear, for I myself will help you,’ declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.”

Mark 9:47
If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell, 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Further, gospels refer to special water which for advanced UIE's could be special non-organic containers to hold those same fields that began as organic life. Thus soul could be spirit electromagnetic field life within such containers. Immortal if not physically destroyed.

John 4:14
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Everyone is born with a soul. Otherwise, you would not be a human being, you wouldn't be alive. The soul gives life to the body, it makes the body live and breathe. I guess you could say the soul is a kind of "energy". I believe when we die, the "soul" or the life energy leaves the human body and rejoins the "main energy body" for want of a better concept.

I do not believe the soul is dependent on religion or spirituality. People have free will to be religious or not, to be spiritual or not.

Hmm, I think this begs the question of whether animals and all living things have souls. I believe they do, maybe just on a different level.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nephesh

Nephesh is a Biblical Hebrew word which occurs in the Hebrew Bible. The word refers to the aspects of sentience, and human beings and other animals are both described as being nephesh. Plants, as an example of live organisms, are not referred in the Bible as being nephesh. The term is literally "soul", although it is commonly rendered as "life", "living being" and "creature" in English translations...

The word nephesh occurs 754 times in the Hebrew Bible. The first four times nephesh is used in the Bible, it is used exclusively to describe animals: Gen 1:20 (sea life), Gen 1:21 (great sea life), Gen 1:24 (land creatures), Gen 1:30 (birds and land creatures). At Gen 2:7 nephesh is used as description of man.

Sentience is the capacity to experience feelings and sensations.

My opinion is the soul is just a made-up idea the same as people having thought thunder was an angry god and other such "explanations". I think it has held on being believed in because we hate the idea of dying and just completely not existing anymore. It is also a much happier way to explain to children, like 'Grandma went to heaven and you can see her someday when you get old and die' is a lot more fun to tell your kid than 'Grandma died so now her existence is over, but we still cherish the memories we have of her and her influence lives on through us'.

Yes, I think so too. I remember learning that trees and rocks had "group" souls. It was an interesting concept.

Despite eight years of parochial school education, I really have no idea. We will probably all have our own take on this question, but I feel that the "soul" may be the personality of the person, what makes them unique from others. I believe pets have souls also, but that's too much for one thread. What do you think about the "soul"? It's a thought provoking question.
Our soul is our personality, who we are. With our soul we think, reason, consider, remember, and wonder. We experience emotions like happiness, love, sorrow, anger, relief, and compassion. And we’re able to resolve, choose, and make decisions.”

As far as animals having souls......🤐

What is a "soul"?

I have pondered that question many times in my life and I still have no idea what a soul is. Maybe the answer is on a need to know basis?

Here on earth, you are a soul within a physical body, but you have no physical body in the afterlife. I believe your "soul" is the eternal essence of who you were in the material world. Your soul exists and will always exist... somewhere.

@Mike, post #6 gave the answer.

YOU are soul.
In the individual, there is an unmanifested absolute Being, the subtle state of life, the subjective aspect of life.
This differs from the objective aspect of life, which is the body and it's varied attributes.
Being is found in all the different forms, phenemona and qualities of the diverse creation.
Life is Being and unity. It is the expression of divinity and the light of God within us.
Your soul is YOU, with or without a physical body. This lives through eternal existence.

Actually, it is possible to have a physical body in the afterlife. The evolved soul is able to materialize or become transparent
by thought alone.
You are right that the soul will always exist.
This is not my opinion. I know this is true. I have experienced proof of this many times.
The soul IS eternal life. The soul IS and at all times WILL BE. This is not an essence or a reflection. You are soul.
