R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
Here we have a nifty little contraption from the early 20[SUP]th[/SUP] century, mounted on a 5" x 3-7/8" wooden base.

Not normally found in the home but instructional to those watching it being used ...

WHAT IS IT?

Gravesande's ring ?
Experiment showing expansion of metal
Ball won't fit through ring when cold but will when ring is heated

That ... is truly impressive.

DING! DING! DING!

We have a winna'!!!

Not much more I can add to Phantom's reply - he gave a textbook explanation!

This specific example was made in London and went at auction for $375 USD.

Congratulations to Phantom!

I think I need to retire from What Is It - I can't seem to find anything you folks can't identify. It's like being an encephalographic idiot at a MENSA meeting ... :playful:
