Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Our holiday WII is a rather old piece, probably from the turn of the last century. It is made of wood and metal and stands 44" tall. It is marked "Pennsylvania No. 3".

WHAT IS IT?
 

Hmmm Looks to me like it would open so I'm thinking a portable desk of some kind? Pennsylvania No # - all I can think of is railroad so I'm taking a stab in the dark that this is a portable desk used by a ticket collector as people get on a train.

Seriously have no idea!!
 
I love your reasoning, but unfortunately no, it isn't a portable railroad desk.

(I KNEW that "Pennsylvania No. 3" would catch people! ;))

It looks like it could connect with a pulley and be used to pump water for an old time fire engine possibly.

Well, I didnt get to the end before i made my guess, and i was definitely WAY off on this one. Congradulations, Di ! ! That was an awesome job of guessing.

This is one I know about, cuz a good friend who just retired at age 82, has a 2000 acre farm, and over the years has restored an 1800's stone barn, and has turned it into a fantastic farming museum. Many thousands items of antique equipment, supported by and donated by farmers from 100's of miles around. His "sheller" is similar, but only about 14 inches wide.
Enough stuff to supply SifuPhil's challenge thread for years. :)
