Jillaroo has once again scored a direct hit with a first response. She has correctly identified these items as football shoulder-pads from the late 1890's. They were offered by manufacturers such as Spalding, Victor and others.
Used by all of the major Ivy League schools as well as the smaller colleges and universities, they were the beginning of the realization that the boys needed protection if they were going to be running into each other full-speed.
