What Is It? - #71

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
Seeing as how my last few WIIs were so quickly and totally mauled like a kitten sleeping beneath a drop bear's tree, I thought I would have to put some extra effort into my quest to bring you, dear readers, only the best and most mysterious of arcane items.

Welcome to ... WII #71.

mystery antique 75.jpg

This item stands approx. 5' in height and is made of cast iron and brass. It hails from Victorian times and is a rare find nowadays.

WHAT IS IT?

It was used to hold people's head still when they had their pictures taken, because it took several minutes I think it was and they had to hold as still as statues.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!

DING! DING! DING!

We have a winna'!!!

Falcon has correctly identified this item as a Victorian Posing Stand.

Because of the long exposure times it was necessary to support the back of the head and (in the model shown here) the back. This is NOT a device for photographing the memento mori or "Death photographs" that was a common practice at the time.

Congratulations Falcon for the quick kill, er, win, and thank you everyone else for your attention!

But, but I got away with it on "What Is It (for the rest of us) #1?!?!?

Grandfathered. :p

Phil, I know I misquoted bad yesterday, about energy and matter, and not being able to destroying it, just being able to change its form. You seem to be someone who would remember that.

Only because I'm an idiot-savant - I can instantly recall every bit of dialogue and every sound effect from the 167 Bugs Bunny cartoons that appeared in theatrical trailers, but I couldn't tell you who the Vice-President is.

Some things just stick to me ... :D

Congratulations Falcon! :goodjob: Kudos for the close second there OH! ;)
