I was in Texas in '85, but I had to return in January for a funeral.

Minus 26 in 1979.

We used to keep our cars outside and when the temps dipped to those levels we would run a mechanics work light, with a 100 watt bulb, out the basement window and put it under the hood of the car to help keep the engine warm so it would turn over in the morning.

I remember having to pull the hand choke almost to the back seat to get my old Chevy started on very cold days and pray that it did...

Minus 21F, one day in the period 1965-1969, in Ohio. I only remember because they called off almost everything. Didn't have to go out. :)

-23 F ambient in Pierre, SD January 2010. High winds took the wind chill down into the -40 range. Even though the project work was all inside an exiting facility, we required the contractor to have a portable toilet for his crew. Couldn't let them wreck the plant's facilities. No one spent any idle time in that ice box!!!!!

The record low for Kailua Kona here on the Big island is 57, set twice in 2003. Oddly enough it was in September and again in October

We lived in the Yukon Territory for a couple of years and and it was not unusual for the temps to go down to -57°F.
So +57°F would have seemed balmy to us.
I remember once at -10°F a friend and I thought it was spring and went on a hike, a neighbor kid went with us, and I had sent her home to get proper boots but didn't check to see that she had done so. Too late I realized she had simply gotten gum boots. That could have easily turned to tragedy as we tried to make sure her feet didn't freeze. By the time we got home my husband was getting a search party to go find us. By the time we got home it was about -25°. Never made that mistake again.

I remember two days in January years ago when the temp in Indianapolis got down to 20 below. I was on a temp assignment and working in a small office partitioned off a big warehouse. There was a heater in the office that probably would have been fine for 20 above, but wasn't cutting it at 20 below. I tried to type with gloves off, gloves on and finally was typing with one finger. I have never been so miserable in my life. I got very sick from it.

Coldest I have seen is -50 with wind chills in -80 December 23,1983 at 10:00 am in Williston, ND. On January 2, 1984 it was 45 above.
