What is wrong with calling a TOILET a TOILET?

Men's Room--Ladies Room---Rest Room---Lavatory--Loo --We need to go to the TOILET and not looking for a place to rest.

Let's call a spade a spade.

Or how about "gotta go to the john?" Curious what you think about calling a spade a spade when a death occurs -- the current trend appears to be "passing" instead of "dying."

You "make your toilet" when you get up in the morning by washing, showering, shaving, applying make up if that is your thing and so on.

It has come in fairly recently as a rather twee euphemism for lavatory.

It was always the lavatory when O was a kid.

They called the outhouse the "Necessary House" in colonial times. Then it became the "comfort station" later. Both pretty good terms, I think.

Before a trip to Europe back in the 1960's, a friend gave me a card that had the phonetic translation of "Where is the ladies' room" in about 15 languages. One of the most useful things I've ever had. For instance, in Italy, you can be faced with two doors, one saying "Signore" and the other one "Signori". I'm desperate....am I an "e" or am I an "i"? Doesn't do any good to peek inside, both have old lady attendants.

In my childhood the unsewered outhouse down the path behind the house was called the dunny and the man who changed the pan weekly was either the dunny man or the sani man.

These days the sewered water closet (WC) in the house is referred to as the loo. It is adjacent to the bathroom which has a whole other function. I am perfectly OK with the word toilet but find the idea of a public toilet being called a bathroom ridiculous but much better than the term little girls room.

To me, the toilet is the thing you (some) sit on. You "go to" the room that has the toilet. Maybe it would be better to just say you are going to the toilet room. ("Rest" only has one syllable. Restroom is quicker to say, if you are in a hurry. ;) )

Who cares what you call it ? JUST GO !

You don't have to tell the whole world about it...........unless, of course, you're on Facebook.

Never complain, never explain, just say excuse me.
Wise words there Bea. :)

Yes Nancy, the toilet is the thing you sit on. :D When I was a kid I might tell my mother I had to go to the bathroom. In grade school, I might ask the teacher if I could use the lavatory. If I'm in a strange movie theater and need to use the facilities and don't see where they are, I might ask where the rest room is, or the ladies room.

I never use the word toilet, but my husband does. I notice ladies say I'm going to the bathroom but some men say I'm going to the toilet. Is there really a gender preference when it comes to terminology?

Growing up with outhouses we called them toilets (40s). So when indoor bathrooms came about toilet didn't fit. Bathroom was the word at home, school, and all places to relieve oneself. Restroom was reserved for pubic situations. I never understood the powder room. 😕😕

Powder room derives from Victorian laydees who would claim to be going to refresh their make up hence "just going to powder my nose / cheeks/ something" hence going to the powder room.

Let's call a spade a spade.
In public places it's nice to know the distinction, but even then males & females don't pay attention and usually look around to see if anyone noticed they entered the wrong gender facility.

At home what difference does it make since announcing the intention isn't needed.

Only thing I've ever been confused with is why call toilet paper bath tissue? Everyone knows when you use it to dry off after a bath or shower it gets soggy and doesn't really work very good.
