I'm scared of growing even older than I am now and Huzz dying or going permanently into skilled nursing facility before I do and leaving me alone in this great big old place that I want to get out of so bad and he refuses to leave. Or he doesn't before I do but he (or I) come down with Alzheimers and are stumbling around here getting lost on our own property and it falling down around our ears.

Winding up hospitalized under the care of racists.
I also fear winding up in a skilled nursing facility under the care of Gen X or younger who are understandably pissed off at having to take care of a Boomer, a member of the generation that didn't do enough about the environment, racism, sexism, classism (the list goes on). I'm really dreading it.

Well I'm not sure. I'm in a great retirement community, living in my own cottage. I've noticed that my 10.5 year old golden doodle Maggie is having a hard time getting around; I do give her glucosamine daily. I've notice that my almost 79 year old self is also having an increasingly more difficult time getting around; I guess it's time to ask my doctor to write an order for physical rehab here on site. I think at the moment my greatest fear is that Maggie, who has been my constant companion since my wife died 10.5 years ago, may not have much time left. I'm afraid that I will spiral into depression when that happens (but perhaps not quite as bad as when my wife died).

I lost a dog, also named Maggie. She was the glue that held the 3 of us together. After she past the house was empty. Now we have Buddy. Seniors should get puppies but we did. We survived, buddy got a little older and the house settled down. It's the 3 of us again which is just fine.
Just a thought. There are older rescue dogs available. There just might be a dog that deserves a home that you could provide. Just a thought. Most people do not want older dogs but in your case it might be a perfect fit. Again, just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestion, worth thinking about! Although I might consider a cat, of which I have also had several in my life, just like dogs. :)

Honestly, I try not to dwell on or be afraid of anything but rather tackle everything while trying to find solutions to problems - like aging because there is NOTHING I have liked about aging and I'm ready for it to stop.
