What is your favorite type of nut?

My favorite nuts are pecans. I put them in baked goods, fudge, add them to ice-cream, etc. I also like a snack of pecans and raisins.

I don't eat macadamia nuts because they are poisonous to dogs. Otherwise, I like basically all nuts except for Brazil nuts.
I love Brazil nuts, but apprently you should only have a maxiumum of 2 a day...safely. I only eat them occasionally

Brazil Nuts – Proceed with Caution
These large, tropical nuts are the exception to the one-ounce-of-nuts-a-day rule because they contain highly concentrated amounts of the trace mineral selenium. In fact, one ounce of Brazil nuts (approximately 8 medium nuts) contains 544 micrograms of selenium, which is 777 percent of the recommended daily allowance.

Eating too many Brazil nuts can lead to toxic levels of selenium in the body (selenosis) and cause symptoms such as bad breath, diarrhea, nausea, skin rashes/lesions, nerve pain and fatigue. In rare cases, very high levels can cause kidney failure, cardiac arrest and even death.

I cannot stand Almonds.. which is a bit of an irony because my daughter owns 5 acres of land of Almond trees.....:D

However for all you Almond fans... apparently too many can cause Kindey stones, so you must keep your almond intake to just once ounce per day...

Can You Overdose on Nuts?

I'm not a big nut eater except... my doctor told me a long time ago to eat one Brazil nut a week. Just one. I found out Brazil nuts are, by far, the most concentrated source of selenium which is vital for the immune system. My Dr. says one per week over a long period of time is perfect.

He is has a medical degree from Venezuela and another from the US. Venezuela medical training is more holistic and nature based and less pharma influenced than here. He would rather avoid or fix a problem than mask it with pills.

So that's what we do, Wednesday is nut day.

I love the candy covered Jordan Almonds. I don't see them often and know they aren't that healthy for me, but I'll still eat a few when I do find them.

lol..I have the best combination for me in my fridge right now.. Brazil nuts covered in dark chocolate...

Cashews
One of the most delicious and popular snack nuts, cashews are a good source of protein, healthy fats, fiber and minerals like magnesium, copper, manganese and zinc. Moderate consumption of cashews may help boost the immune system, improve energy levels and support brain and bone health.

Side effects from eating cashews are very rare; however, regularly eating far more than the recommended amount may lead to digestive symptoms such as bloating or constipation/diarrhea, headache and joint swelling. Keep in mind that about 20 percent of the fat content in cashews is saturated fat, which is much higher than most other nuts, so portion size is especially important.

I'm doubly glad I don't like them. When I used to belong to bridge clubs, of course someone always brought Bridge Mix to the party. That's how I found out how very much I don't like Brazil nuts.

Thank you for this information. It's important that people know that.

Although I also like Brazil nuts, I've avoided them. Years ago, when I took a class on radiation, the teacher brought a Brazil nut to class and placed it close to the Geiger counter. He said he used that to calibrate the machine. Can you believe it? The machine started beeping a lot. Because of their radiation, Brazil nuts should not be eaten.

Here is an interesting article that talks about their radiation and selenium: How Many Brazil Nuts Are Radiation Poisoning? Chart, Health Benefits

From that link....

Brazil nuts have a high amount of natural radionuclide, making them 1000 times more radioactive than other foods. They consist of a significant amount of radium that contributes to their radioactivity.

Brazil nuts (especially the ones grown in Brazil) grow on trees that have deep roots, which reach into the soil to produce high amounts of natural radium, a source of radiation.

The radiation is measured in Sievert, and microSievert is used for hourly radiation exposure. MilliSievert (mSv) is used for annual exposure. Exposure to 100 mSv of radiation a year can increase cancer risk in people.

  • If the annual consumption of Brazil nuts amounts to 52 ounces per year (one or two nuts of four grams each), the radiation exposure reaches up to 0.27 mSv.
  • This value does not pose a health risk to the person consuming it, which means eating two to three nuts a day poses no health hazard.
  • However, eating about 50 nuts a day may cause toxicity.

All of them. I consider Macadamias and Cashews to be the Cadillac of nuts. Apparently the suppliers know this, as reflected by the price.

Nuts are a rich source of heart-healthy fats, fiber,protein...and calories!
