What Natural Disaster Is the Biggest Threat in Your Area?

Not much here in western NY State. We get the rare tornado touch down, but not as bad as in Midwest. Sometimes we get heavy rains connected to some of the hurricanes that come up the coast. Oh yea...and snow. We get snow.

San Andreas fault, here is a tour of the fault section that runs through our area: http://www.backroadswest.com/blog/san-andreas-fault-wrightwood/ .

Brush fires are really more of an immediate problem, such as the recent devastating Blue Cut fire.

My first ever earthquake was actually due to the San Andreas Fault. March,22,1957.It was centered in Daly City,CA and I was in San Bruno,CA. I was in first grade and since we only went to school half days back then,it was close to going home time. The quake happened at about 11:45 a.m. Scared the beejezus out of all of us and the teacher as well. I still can see those old school light fixtures swinging and swaying and Mrs. Montandon waving her arms for us all to get under our desks. We had no idea what she wanted us to do. I don`t think she could even talk, she was so scared. Took all of us kids a while to get over that.

Tornadoes are not a big threat but have happened here in Colorado, we have a room in the basement without a window that we'd probably seek shelter in if need be, but so far in over 30 years we haven't had to do that. We have some major snow storms/blizzards that I don't really consider a threat. Worst thing would be no grocery shopping for a couple of weeks, and we have enough in the pantry to get us through any kind of emergency like that. Thankfully never experienced a major disaster like a hurricane or big earthquake, I guess if there was a volcanic eruption of intensity in nearby states it could be devastating to all of us. Hoping that doesn't happen.

Hurricane and tornado. 30 years in Florida, never hit by a hurricane, but did have a tornado back in 1991.

My sister lives on the Atlantic coast and got hit by hurricanes twice in one year.
