Here’s a question. When we go anywhere at all, except out for the evening, she carries a fairly good sized bag with anything and everything in it. BUT, when we go out for the evening, she carries a small bag the size of small letter envelope and puts her big bag on the floor in the bag seat. She has a couple of those small bags. Some have a long chain, some don’t. Some are gold in color and some are silver in color and 1 or 2 of them are made of leather. I have seen a red one and a black one. I never questioned it as to what’s the difference. Don’t they all do the same thing? Why so many handbags. And, shy when women buy a new pair of shoes, they gave to buy a new pocketbook? And who is Michael Kohr? I never understood pocketbooks.
@911 Purses do the same thing differently. A large purse carries a lot of items a lady might consider day-to-day necessities when she leaves the house: her wallet, sunglasses, tissues, pen, compact, lipstick, comb, mints, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, Swiss army knife, phone, water bottle, etc.

Not all of that can fit into a small bag. She carries a smaller bag when going to dinner because she doesn't need all the things she usually carries for the few hours she's out at dinner. Perhaps just her comb, lipstick, compact, tissues, credit card, and phone.

Just as your wife does, I've also taken my large bag with me and left it in the car.
A lot of women have so many purses because they simply like purses. I don't think a new pair of shoes necessitates a new purse, but some women do.
