What to do with a scooter someone left on my property

It's been out there for almost a week. It was laying in the grass until this morning. When I went out, someone has propped it up against my garage. I've been over to the police station twice and no one was there. Mayhaps it isn't really a police matter, but I am curious why a kid would just leave a scooter out like that. I'd like whoever owns it to remove it, or I'm putting it out at my sale.

From the color, it looks like it might belong to a young girl & it's probably important to her. Since it's not causing any problems, I'd leave it there; someone will probably pick it up.

Is it in working order or broken? If broken, someone must have dumped it, otherwise I would assume it's been stolen.

it's more than likely stolen. around here someone will steal a bike and ride it to get to where their going and then drop it and walk off.

I see toys like that laying around a lot. It's just kids with a short attention span and no sense of responsibility. They will learn when they start paying for things.

Deb, why not put your goggles and a crash helmet on, go scooting around the neighbourhood with wild abandon, then someone is bound to shout out to you, "Oooooooiy, that's my scooter your galivanting about on, give it here, Missus." :)

We have had two pretty nice bikes left in our yard over the past few years. Our first call is to the local police department. They take our information and send a car by to pick them up. If not on their 'reported stolen' list and not claimed in 30 days, we get a call saying it's our and come pick it up. Living in a university town, we have a large Asian student population. We deliver the bikes to the Asian Student Support Center. Their new students are always looking for bikes. Both times we get a nice thank you not from them.

do they actually dust for prints for something like that? they don't do that here. you ask them to and they laugh at you and tell you that you watch too much tv.
In my city, you would have to self-report online.

The police do not do any follow-up. They just like to know how things are going in your part of town. :giggle:

Similar here: (actually in the next county over), my Nephew-in-law rents a room in a big house. A couple years ago, 2 days before Christmas, another tenant committed suicide by shooting himself in one of the bathrooms. After the body had been removed and the police who responded were finished with the investigation and getting ready to leave, NIL asked the police if they would be calling the company who comes in to clean up crime scenes (which as you can imagine was horrendous) or if he would have to call them. They look back blankly at him and say, "Whaddaya talkin' about?" He repeated himself and the cop just shook his head and said "You've been watching too much TV, kid. This county doesn't provide that." (So the landlord had NIL clean it up and paint it.)

they do have special companies that can clean it up at your expense. i think our service master place does but i could be wrong. but yeah i can't see the county doing that. lol!!

The first question I would ask is, "does the owner know it was left there"? Could it have been stolen and then deserted? Try calling the police in case it was reported as stolen.

Interesting:
How Long Can Someone Leave Their Property At Your House? https://upgradedhome.com/how-long-can-someone-leave-their-property-at-your-house/

That really has to do with the Landlord-Tenant relationship. I doubt there is any "specific" law relating to these facts. A child is not likely to be presumed to abandon property, at least in a legal determination of facts. I would do the police thing or keep it in my garage for a reasonable time.
