What to wish someone at this time of year

I would like to start a discussion here about what to say to people at the holidays. Around Facebook there are many who go totally mentally irregular if someone dares to wish them "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" at this time of year rather than Merry Christmas. But, as a practicing, church going Christian, I do not get all up in arms about that. One, not all people on this planet are Christian, they do celebrate other holidays at this time of year. Some, none at all. There are many holidays lumped into these few weeks. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years, Hannukah and others. So, what is the issue? I do not feel that simply wishing a simple greeting that wishes one a joyous time of year takes Christ out of Christmas at all. What do you think?
 

I agree with you and think Happy Holidays covers it all on FB. I don't understand those who go crazy over not hearing Merry Christmas either.
 
Happy hols works for me too and everyone I know on and off Facebook.
 

Since MOST things are about Christmas; stores, radio, TV, newspapers etc.

I'll go along with the flow. (Very little is displayed regarding other religions.)

Usually it's "Have yourself a merry little Christmas!" or "Have a nice holiday!"

With me it's not so much about treading lightly about religion as it is about all of the "stuff" that people are going through in their private lives. The Christmas season can magnify the problems in peoples lives and dredge up a lot of old baggage.
 
I say Merry Xmas to friends and family, except when I was working in an office with a diverse environment, in which case, it was considered a no no to say the Xmas word and many did not want to hear traditional carols either, no references to christian holiday were appreciated, it had to be non-demoninational happy holiday or the like.
 
Nattering Nabobs of Negativity ! (by Spiro Agnew, Vice Prez under Nixon) We constantly question what words are "appropriate" until we realize "we shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall set us free." The Truth is; we say Merry Christmas. There, now we're Free.
 
Oy that obviously it depends on where you live as well. Small town PA it's probably Merry Christmas across the board. Livingston, New Jersey and more Jews than Christians. But the town puts on a nice display for all faiths there.
 
I'm not religious at all although I was raised Catholic as a child. I've said or written in cards, Merry Christmas, Best Wishes, Season's Greetings, Happy Holidays, etc. It doesn't bother me if any type of expression like that is said to me. In the end, people usually say these things to wish others well during the season, that's all that matters. The intent should override the words, IMO.

I'm not going to nitpick that someone said or didn't say Merry Christmas to me. I don't do facebook Marie, from all I hear, a lot of people there go totally "mentally irregular" as you say, for a lot of different reasons, not just a holiday greeting. I can do without the excess negative drama, can't be healthy to be surrounded by it too much.

I give you credit Marie, although you're a practicing Christian, you're open minded and mature enough to take the holiday greetings in a positive way, the spirit that they were given in. Good for you, wish more folks were that stable and reasonable. Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas! :christmas2:
