What type of dog best suits your personality? Super smart, dumb, stubborn, friendly?

I like a smart dog. Someone who is very trainable and biddable. Someone wants to please and is willing to do whatever you ask of him/her. I like a dog who likes to behave and follow the rules. Also a low energy dog, someone who is happy to lay around and veg.

But I read an article in a dog magazine where this guy really liked dumb dogs and recommended them.

He said his dog was so dumb and forgetful that when his nephews and nieces came over they pulled his ears which he hated. But the dog never hated them because in between visits, the dog forgot they pulled his ears. Whereas a smart dog would remember and bear a grudge.

I had never considered this aspect of dog personality. He gave more examples but I’ve forgotten what they were. Lol.

So, I am not asking what breed of dog you like, but what personality traits you like and look for in a dog.

I like smart dogs also, but most of them are smart. If a dog doesn't seem smart maybe it's a reflection on the trainer/owner? My favorite thing about dogs is that they're always so happy to see you. I met a dog in my travels who was dying. His owner told me. His fur was patchy and his skin all flaky and he had bad breath, but I gave him some pats and hugs and his tail started wagging like a pup's. Love conquers all. I hope his passing was peaceful. Dogs are pretty awesome.

Small to medium size, short hair, happy and fun-loving + being a good
watch dog. Oh, and being a male.

Falcon,

I am glad you said that cause I decided to not get a dog again since my husband was too rough with Grace. But he’s never rough with Koda. Koda is a male dog. He’s always liked male dogs. In a year or so, I might get a male dog and see if that works better. I am going to think about it. Do you fix you dogs or leave them intact?

I love my current dog. He's small, so he can sit with me all the time, and he gives me unconditional love. No strings attached.
My heart will break the day he leaves this world.

Why would anyone allow children to pull their dog's ears? Sounds to me like that dog OWNER was the dumb one.

I love all dogs and cannot abide seeing them mistreated. So if you can't love a dog, don't have a dog.

I love my dog the way she is..she accepts me unconditionally, is very laid back, and even though she doesn't know any tricks I think she's pretty darn smart! :sentimental:

I think that guy was dumber than the dog just for letting his nephews and nieces pull his ears, of course he hated that because it's painful. Dogs seem to be very trusting of humans, and they seem to be very forgiving when someone abuses them, sometimes they'll suffer for that because some people are just cruel. I don't like when people give dogs human attributes, like they hold grudges, are spiteful, etc. That's just the person's interpretation of what's going on with the dog.

I like dogs that are friendly, affectionate and laid back. Almost any breed of dog can be trained to behave as long as the owner puts some time and effort into it, and uses only positive methods, nothing harsh to make the dog fearful. My dog now is very nice, follows me around a lot in the house, listens well enough to be off leash in safe areas, completely housebroken at a young age, etc. My past dogs were the same way.

In my younger days, I liked very active dogs who would go running and so on with me, but now that my running days are sadly behind me, I like calmer, less active dogs who are happy with just a walk around the neighborhood. For that reason, I look for older dogs. I adopted my Bonnie when she was 7+ years old and just recently lost her to mast cell cancer. I'm presently looking for another older dog, a calm soul to share retirement with me. I know he or she is out there. I am particularly fond of larger, black dogs. He or she doesn't have to be an Einstein, just a kind loving soul looking for a home.

When I was growing up,we had different dogs who all were friendly, loyal, loving, always like going on walks
I'm a life long dog lover,I like most dogs except for small, yippy ones{no offense to those who own one} The last dog we had was a golden retriever
My close friends,Marcia&Dave family dog is Aker, a pharoh hound, affectionate, friendly who I absolutely love,my 'buddy boy'
I take him on afternoon walks every chance I get, I say this because one of the rules in my apt building is "NO PETS"

Oh that's easy. which ever one chooses me.:) Imagine thinking that you chose them. :p Ha. that'll be the day.
Seriously, I love em all.

What type of dog best suits my personality?
A dog that looks and acts like a cat.
For me, it's a dog that goes "meow".
And for all those canine lovers, what cat best suits your personality? It would be a "cat" that goes "woof".:)

I need a dog that I can cuddle. Big or small,it doesn't matter. I was lucky that all my dogs loved to be cuddled and kissed to death. My Labs would try and climb on my lap and we slept together also. When I was growing up my first dog was a Beagle. After a bad day at school he would listen to me and let me cry into his fur until he was wet with tears. What a pal he was.

If I had only one thing that I could change in all of them is the fact that they were all runners. I don't know if it was because of their background or why they took off if given the chance. They all had a fenced in good half acre and we took them for walks as well. It was always a worry. We had to make sure the gate was always shut. People had to be careful coming and going.

I like smart independent dogs that need a life of their own and room to roam.

At this point in my life, I wouldn't take on the responsibility of a pet unless I was fairly certain that I would be able to outlive it and care for it.

This is the perfect dog for me! :):playful::eek:nthego:
