What Was the Last Movie You Watched?

Yes, one knows what one will be getting in a J. Statham movie, and he delivers every time. In a way he puts me in mind of Clifton Webb, who, after starring in Laura, he played the identical character in every role in film after that.

Granted Statham has played some good comedy roles, but he's almost always called upon to play a vengeful bad dude. Here, the story was pretty cookie cutter trite, although with a decent hook.

And I too am sick to death of the prurient and exaggerated use of foul language in film. It's become like fingernails scraping on a black board. Evidently producers and writers think that foul language makes films "hip". Good films don't need it.
I so agree with your last two sentences! I hope the trend dies out. I intend to see more Jason Statham movies. I didn't know he did comedic roles as well.

We watched Woman of the Hour on Netflix this evening, staring and directed by Anna Kendrick. It was her directorial debut and she did a great job. This movie was really creepy! I'd credit the stark film score as well.

In 1970s Los Angeles, as a wave of murders makes headlines, a young woman aspiring to become an actress and a serial killer cross paths during an episode of a dating show.

He's actually very funny in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), and especially in Snatch (2000). I wish he'd do more comedies or dark comedies. His tough guy roles are getting a little long in the tooth. But as long as his vengeance films keep making big profits, they'll keep pumping them out. I recall that Charles Bronson had a similar career.

Late Night With the Devil. Loved it! It was fast paced and totally creepy, but little to no gore and no gratuitous sex like so many other horror films have. Plus, they really nailed the whole 70's-late-night-show vibe.

I just treated myself to a subscription to the Criterion channel.
I watched a 2022 Japanese movie today called Plan 75.

In a dystopian future, Japan’s government launches Plan 75, a program to encourage the elderly to terminate their own lives to relieve it’s rapidly aging population’s social and economic burdens.😮
Thanks for recommending this. I borrowed the DVD from my library.

Interesting film that shows the perspective of the elderly, the young people recruiting elderly to voluntarily die, those working in other infrastructure aspects of the Plan 75 operation, and how the government advertises the plan as one of good citizenship.

Ive just watched for the second time the fim Harriet,a black slave who escaped and continued to go back to get other slaves out . True story
Harriet Tubman is an extraordinarily famous American Black Abolitionist and suffragette whose actions, along with others', helped change American history.

She's considered by many (myself included) to be a true American hero.

I watched The Spy Factory NSA on Prime Video last night. It's also on YouTube but you'll need to sit through countless commercials.

Examine the high-tech eavesdropping carried out by the National Security Agency and the pitfalls of surveillance in an age of terrorism.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) on Prime Video starring Denzel Washington and Collin Farrell.
Denzel was nominated for an Academy award for his performance, and deservedly so. He was good. Some of the movie was implausible, but all in all, it was interesting and humorous at times.

6.5 on IMDB, which is about what I'd give it.

"Air" (2014)

Drama, sort of sci-fi. Very tiny cast, most of the film just one young woman. Weird. Clunky. Maybe meant as a super low-budget art film?

Scuba diver finds her husband dead and floating underwater behind her. Tries to rescue him but comes up to find the air unbreathable.

Ending is a downer but not very heart wrenching. Maybe I was too worn out.

Free on Tubi and YouTube with ads.

Francis in the Haunted House (1956)

Halloween flick. Very light. Featuring Francis the Talking Mule! And when did you last watch a Micky Rooney movie?

Whole movie on YouTube, with host segments inserted.
