What Was the Last Movie You Watched?

"Brooklyn"
"I'll find you"
Both were excellent.
I read "Brooklyn", thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't realize it had been made into a movie. Sometimes even well-made movies ruin a good book so I'm not sure if I'll check this one out or not.

Thanks for the head's up on "I'll Find You". It appears to be streaming (free) on Hoopla.

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood (2019)

Re-watched this picture last night. It still holds up. Some comments from 2019:

The picture was not in the main what I imagined it was going to be, given all the hype and speculation about it for the past year. I admired the film, chiefly for it's first rate acting from all, and secondly for the Hollywood/L.A. settings of which I am so familiar.

It was certainly somewhat of a nostalgic plum to the end of the 1960s (when Tarantino was only 6 years old). He obviously loves the time period (the way I love the 1940s), its styles, its music, and its TV & films. I hadn't suspected a comedy/fantasy, so it was a relief not to see his typical gore fetish on display. In fact the fictional outcome of the Manson cult may have been the way Tarantino wished it would have been.

He did about as good a job as could be done with re-creating the settings of that era, because so many of its iconic buildings have been torn down. But there was enough to give a fairly authentic representation of the era. One thing that's very difficult to recreate is the atmospheric haze/smog that was continuously present in 1969. I've never seen that in any other city. That, along with the characteristic flora, semi-arid conditions, and crazy architecture everywhere made L.A. unique.

The story lines were in the main entertaining and believable, and the relationship was solid between the two leads. Hopefully there will be future films with this pairing of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Doc's rating: 7/10

It's available on various streaming services, or here: Once Upon A Time.....In Hollywood 2019 1080p

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie because I'm wary of Tarantino flicks. He generally indulges in umm, picturesque violence and was relieved that he strayed from from his usual.

If I recall correctly, the only over-the-top violent in this film scene was closer to hilarious than disconcerting.

I too was wary of a possible gore-fest in "Once Upon a Time...", given Tarantino's predilection for bloody violence, and especially referring to the Manson cult murders. That's why I waited quite awhile to see it-- until I'd heard otherwise.

Turns out I needn't have worried. As you say, the limited bloody stuff at the end was silly, and played for laughs.

Just watched One Eyed Jacks, starring and directed by Brando. An old fashioned oater. Brando! Every time he was on screen my eyes were glued to him, what charisma. I couldn't get enough of him. The movie wasn't bad either.

His best ever though was Streetcar Named Desire.

Both good movies. And in "Jacks" Karl Malden was playing against type as a sadistic bad guy.

I couldn't help noticing over the years where Brando seem to shine in rolls in which he was beaten up or whipped. Great actor, but a strange man. I think after "Streetcar", then On the Waterfront, he became superstar material.

@ChiroDoc Agree with everything you said. Interesting too that Malden and Brando were together in at least 2 other movies that I know of (Waterfront and Streetcar) Others?
I don't know of any other movies. But they worked well together in those two pictures.

Evidently they acted together in two Broadway plays: Truckline Cafe (1946), and A Streetcar Named Desire (1947).

Pulled 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' from the shelf and watched it again.
Not so much about Chess, as it is about being true to yourself.

The scene with Josh and his Chess teacher on winning, is one of my favorites.

Gloria Bell - very American of course but unusual and quirky imo - I thought I was watching another well known actress altogether - but this was rather gusty ; with problems families on both sides - it for me oozed with realism in a USA city context - thought I was sorta watching a doco - and I cannot recall coming across such a good actress that I was totally unaware of?

Julianne Moore
Watched this last night based on your recommendation. I recognized Julianne Moore straightaway - she's a well-known actress who's been in dozens of films, including the starring role in Still Alice, for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award. Surprised you haven't stumbled over her before.

I agree with your assessment of the film and am glad to have seen it.

I just received Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5 on DVD.
This season has the some of the best episodes on it. Most I don't believe I saw before.

I just watched episode 25: The Inner Light which is the highest rated episode on IMDB.

Captain Piccard is struck by an invisible beam and sent to a planet where he has a wife and raises a family.
Good acting by Piccard and the woman who plays the wife.

"Twisters" (2024).

Not even a pale ghost of the original movie. Character portrayals were lifeless, unbelievable, and uncharismatic with corny fake accents tossed in at random. Casting was bizarre. Cinematography screamed "Hallmark." Story was yet another soap opera. Soundtrack was mostly bad imitation hillbilly music.

It's like a crazy person watched the first one and set out to undermine the entire thing.

I agree. DH and I watched it because we had liked the original, but were sorely disappointed in this remake.
