What Was the Last Movie You Watched?

The Imitation Game, it was on the television a couple of nights ago. Based on a true story, the cast carried it along perfectly. In 1939, newly created intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Alan Turing to crack Nazi codes including Enigma, which cryptanalysts had thought, unbreakable. Turin's team analyse Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turin and the team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952 the quiet genius encounters disgrace over his sexuality and is sent to prison.

What a way to treat a hero. It was estimated that the work of Turing and his team shortened the war by as much as two years, but that meant for nothing when bigoted laws are on the statute.

Finally, On August 19, 2014, something exceptional happened. Queen Elizabeth II granted a posthumous pardon to Alan Turing convicted in 1952 for homosexual acts. Thus ended a long process of the British state to apologise to one of its most outstanding scientific figures of the twentieth century, whose contributions had a historical impact. During World War II he played a key role in helping the Allies to decipher the secret communications of the Nazis. And before that he had launched an idea that transformed computers into the powerful and versatile machines they are today.

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but my curiosity got the best of me and I watched the movie Barbie. There was a lot of fluff of course, which I was expecting, but it did deal with many social issues in a satirical way. All in all I thought the movie was...what's the word...stupid. So stupid that I actually laughed at myself for wasting 2 hours of my life.

I read a lot of reviews after watching it, and so many people liked it though. Guess I'm just not a Barbie fan.

Even if you haven't read the books, the Divergent series of films is pretty decent. There are 3: Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant (2014-2016). I'd previously only seen the first.

All 3 are on Tubi right now, but leave in 3 days!

MIB: International. I could have sworn I saw it before, but realized as it moved along that I'd only seen the first part. So I'm glad I watched. It was a cute movie. I love seeing all the alien characters they come up with.

I watched Tomorrow Is Forever last night. 1946 - 1 Hr. 43 Min. Starring Claudette Colbert, Orson Welles & George Brent. Black & White. Prime Video was free last night.

A woman's husband, listed dead in World War I, goes to work for her second husband during World War II.

I enjoyed it.

This film was great IMHO. I didn't think I'd like it after all the hype it got. But it was very moving.

Maybe you mean Cowboys and Aliens? I actually like that one. It has a lot of ties to existing lore.

This one "Occupation" (2018) is low budget but somehow nowhere near as schlocky as most of what's been pumped out in the last 5 years.

I'm glad you watched these. I've been meaning to watch more of Sandler's movies and have only seen two - 50 First Dates and The Waterboy - and I am hooked.
I am about to lose more friends but I don't like Sandler! And I have no explanation for it! I see faces on the screen and simply don't like watching them. Mickey Rooney, Patrick Swayze, Sean Penn, Bruce Dern, Johnny Depp. I liked the latter in the "Pirates" movies and most of the others as they aged but have no explanation for an instinctive reaction to some faces!

LOL

I remember a study that was done where young children reacted to pictures of faces without context.

There were surprising correlations among them, clumped into groups. Even some of the names they came up with for face types was oddly similar within those groups: corn head, shoe face, devil eyes, witch chin, pig nose, etc.

There was no consensus or firm theories about what was going on. Hypotheses were advanced about genetics and recognition of phenotypes, but they admitted the study couldn't prove or disprove that.

*** Oh, I forgot to add Richard Gere (whom I like now) and Sacha Baron Cohen (whom I can't stand to this day!) And Will Ferrell and Steve Martin! Okay, I will stop now!

Love Actually on Netflix with Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Alan Richman....and a whole bunch more. It was such a delightful movie and so inspirational to hold the ones you love close. It was the last movie my husband and I watched together the night before he died in October.

"Love, Actually" has become our family Christmas tradition. We watch it every year, along with the new "Miracle on 34th Street!" And I am terribly sorry about your husband. I lost my wife in 2015! 💔

I am the same way regarding the list you gave. At first, I didn't care for Sandler, but as I watched his two movies, he grew on me!

What a wonderful memory, to have seen a delightful movie with your late husband before he passed. I don't think I've seen this one, though. I will have to look for it. I did enjoy Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant in Pride and Prejudice.

Bad CGI Gator

Clever. While other movies try to perfect CGI to look "realistic", this one knew it didn't have the budget. So it gave up, embraced its limitations, and went crazy with it. A dumb dumb dumb movie, with few redeeming factors. Except it was fun to watch a gator (poorly rendered) fly by flapping its little legs. Complete nonsense. But it made me smile.

Hynotique on Amazon Prime. Ben Affleck. Dystopian/sci fi/definitely weird and not for me. Fortunately it was only 1.5 hours.

Not a movie, but a TV series you may have missed.

"Dead Like Me" (2003-2004):

Mostly a comedy, but the end of the pilot might make you shed a tear.
